CHAPTER 18
FEAR

MORBID. That was the word Levi used to describe this year's games and Persephone couldn't help but agree.

The arena was covered in large plains with tall grass, the only visible water source being a river that circled the cornucopia. The rest was just flat ground with weeds that were big enough to strangle tributes by their neck in their sleep. In the north, some mountains appeared to tower over a meadow and in the opposite direction, sand dunes. To the east and west that connected between the two, a large endless forest.

Six and eight fought each other over a bag of supplies and the only bow in the entire arena in front of the forest just outside the plains of the cornucopia but were killed mercilessly by the boy from twelve who third partied. When a tribute from six dropped their guard after obtaining the bow, the two from twelve joined to third party. Llyod slit her across the throat and stabbed a knife through the back of her partner. The boy from eight that lost the fight over the bow was coughing out blood beside his district partner when he was mercifully put out of his suffering. Before a scream could leave the girl's throat as she attempted to run, a knife lodged itself into her back and she toppled over. He snatched the bag alongside the weapon they fought over without a moment of hesitation.

Blood soaked him from head to toe after the encounter with none of it being his own. He pulled the knives out from their bodies, placing them back into his belt and let out a huff. After wiping his hands on the material of his pants, he jogged towards the dark haired girl in the distance, the skin around her blue eyes shining from the thick blood that coated her face. Watching as she pulled the sword out from the boy she killed's chest, he tossed her the bow.

Smiling in thanks, Valentina used her sleeve to swipe away the blood on her face but only smeared it. She threw the strap for the quiver over her shoulder and stood up. "4 and 5 ran in that direction," she pointed her finger towards the mountains, "Said they will look for more water and food." The quiet boy nodded and they both jogged in that direction.

Caesar Flickerman whistled, impressed at the sight. "I smell quite the alliances forming right now." He rewinded the tape to play a recap of the beginning, watching as the tributes from District 1 and 2 killed the morphlings from District 3 without blinking. "Now, if I have this right, I believe that the careers have teamed up. And if I wasn't paying attention, I would've missed the secret alliance that is beginning to form between Districts 4, 5, and 12?"

Letting out a bewildered laugh, he mused at the irony as he recalled towards his audience who were watching from their homes, "If we recall, the girl from 12 is the sister of another tribute from the 66th games." He smirked at the screen as it replayed the flirtatious and close interactions between the capitol's darling and the tribute from 12 that year. "Perhaps Cabel is taking a page out of his sister's book and giving us a wonderful game to look forward to this year."
