CHAPTER 21
DEJA VU

FINNICK IS quite the charmer. He tends to attract those around him to follow him and praise him. When he enters the room, his presence demands attention and acknowledgement. For some, it's because of his sun-kissed skin and bronze blonde hair that makes him look like a painting. The chiselled jaw and sharp ocean-like green eyes that are speckled with blue are domineering and confident. With his appearance that leaves no room for critique, he's by far a capitol favourite.

For the rest, it's his personality. The way he holds himself and spews out compliments and pretty words without so much as a thought. Kindness is sewed into him like second nature when he speaks and his smile is alluring and bright. The way he talks is almost animated and passionate, putting on a great mask for those around him so they can too believe how great he is.

Yet when Persephone watches him talk to groups of sponsors from a distance, it's neither of those that makes her attracted to him. The view of his side-profile that was smug and cocky, playing the part of an egotistical but kind victor, was not the Finnick Odair she saw.

Behind the act he puts on, the one where he stands like an object on display for the capitol where he flaunts his good looks and money, he's just a boy.

Just barely a few months over seventeen, the maturity in his expression is astounding to her. The way he was intricate on his words and acts accordingly without faults. She couldn't help but be amazed.

Where she shied away from her reality and often froze up when she wasn't sure what to do, the older boy was different. Compared to how she almost went mad and gave up on herself, he kept fighting against the capitol in his own way. And while she wasn't even sure who she herself was anymore, there was no doubt in her mind that he was more put together and aware of his own self than anyone else in this room.

The Finnick Odair in her mind glowed in more ways than one. Part of her felt undeserving of his care and couldn't help but feel distant from him from where she stood in the room. His beautiful smile that accompanied his laughter was worth ten times more than anything she could provide him. He felt untouchable to her, the way he held her hand through it all and sacrificed everything for her made her feel a sense of indescribable guilt. Perhaps that was why she couldn't help the feeling of insecurity that washed through her body when she thought of how easily he could have chosen someone else.

Forcing her eyes onto something different, she tried to put her attention back on the conversation in front of her. The sweetness of her tone and the smile she put on for the men in front of her was sickening. She almost couldn't recognise the sound of her own voice. The disgustingly putrid looks of their blushing cheeks as they swallowed the sight of her body made her skin boil with pain.
