Three long years alone in New York.
Three long years of hardly seeing another soul and battling the Dead.
As Y/n filled her backpack with a ton of canned food and miscellaneous items, she heard the radio on her hip warble and shriek. She sighed in great annoyance and answered the call. "Yes, Leo?"
"When are you coming back to the lair?" He asked.
"I'll be there in ten. I saw a squirrel... we all know how that goes." She said lowly, zipping up her bag and tossing it on her shoulder.
Leo has been one of the best role models since her (family member) died three years ago at the beginning of the end. Although there are times he's just a little too protective and tells her to do things a certain way. Really, there are plenty of ways to solve situations, but they can't always have the same solution. Surprisingly, Y/n's had to teach the leader of her new family that.
While she ran out of the abandoned building, she hopped out of the broken window and stepped into the city that almost never slept... until recently three years ago. It's still sad to see, but honestly, for the better... with the direction the world was heading, it was best for it to just come to an end and start over. Now that Y/n lives in a world full of emptiness and infected, she thought of it as a blessing and a curse. She lost people and gained new ones.
The city of Manhattan used to be full of chaos and noise, now its nothing but a massive obstacle course full of abandoned cars and buildings. The world is frozen in time forever with overgrown plants and water damage, and it was actually beautiful to see the earth take over man-made objects and cover them in moss and vines. It was a privilege to see.
Now that she is on full alert and watching her surroundings of the city, she brought out her handgun as she still spoke to Leo through the radio. "What's dinner looking like tonight?" She asked.
"Deer." He answered. "Again."
Y/n chuckled, picking up her pace and jogging on the sidewalk full of stray leaves and weeds. She gasped in a humorous manner. "No dessert on the side?" She asked jokingly.
Leonardo laughed through the radio. "Yeah, we just have a box of funfetti and unspoiled milk waiting to be used." Says Leo.
"Of course, I'm kidding." Says Y/n, turning a corner of the street. "Y'know... we haven't seen infected for a while. Any idea where they are?"
It took Leo a second to answer her question. "Donnie said their farther north of the city. He's been monitoring their every move."
"Good riddance." Y/n says, adjusting her backpack on her shoulders. She breathed out and took a glance up at the skyscrapers, noticing the greenery had grown more from the last time she saw it. It looked thicker and healthier. Y/n found it to be neat. "Well, I'm almost around the corner. Manhole ready?"
"Always." Says Leo.
Y/n reached the alleyway of where the lair is located beneath and saw that the manhole was ready for her to use. Quickly, she removed her backpack and dropped it at the bottom before climbing down the ladder. Then, once she was clear, she pulled the manhole cover over the top and is consumed by the darkness. She hopped off the ladder midway and created a loud thud inside the sewer tunnels, hearing it echo as she picked up her pack.
She swung it around her right shoulder and walks the large tunnel to make it back into her home full of mutants. Four mutant turtle brothers and an old rat. Luckily, April O'Neil, Casey Jones, and Vernon Fenwick made it through the apocalypse and hunkered down in the lair as well... but there are moments Y/n wished they didn't bicker so much. It got annoying, but that's what happens when you're in an apocalypse and stuck in an underground home with hardly any space.
