The engagement party was a success. Giuseppe was surprised how many people accepted Regenia, and none of them questioned who she used to be or her past. To him, she was made for this. She knew how to work all of their men. What to say and what not to say. Most would think he trained her, but Giu did nothing. That's what made Regenia special; she studied her surroundings and learned the crowd. He had to say she would have made a damn good detective if they hadn't been trying to ruin her.
They all knew if she had stayed or cracked the case, she would have uncovered their dirty little secrets. Everyone in the precinct was working under his cousin, and no one knew. Berardo was a snake in sheep's clothing. No one was safe when it came to him. Ardo was the type of man that would draw you in and then feed you to the wolves to save his ass if needed, but it was the life they lived. Sometimes you had to be that way, but not with your family.
The mafia was built off family, and everyone in it was meant to honor a code. The Romano code was family over everything. If one went against that, they were a disgrace to the whole family. Berardo's code was to climb to the top and stomp on everyone to get there. He didn't give a damn if it was family or some random person off the streets. If he could use them, he would then, in the end, stick a knife in their back. Giuseppe couldn't understand why on earth he would want to live that way. Why would he go against his family when he had everything he needed where he was at?
They could have ruled their family and took everything by storm if he hadn't been so against him. Berardo wanted his family out of the way and wanted to rule their mafia the wrong way. However, that would never happen. Giuseppe was sure of that, and with his beauty by his side, nothing could stop them that he was sure of. However, that was the least of his worries.
Giuseppe needed to know why his father chose last night of all night to announce he was stepping down after he was married. Surely the old fool had to know word would get this to his crazyass nephew. It had to be what he wanted. Giovanni wanted to see what he was made of. How he and Regenia would handle pressure on the two of them, or would they use their engagement to their advantage? Something that was easier said than done.
All of the shit was so fucking frustrating to Giuseppe. He hated that his father was throwing all this bullshit into his lap. If the man had taken care of it long ago, shit would have been much smoother, but that wasn't possible with the life they lived. There was bullshit around each corner, and he was getting fed up. "Merda!"
"Isn't it too early in the morning for you to be in a foul mood?" Slowly Giuseppe turned to see his beautiful bride-to-be. Over the past few months, she was the only thing that lightened his mood. He was growing attached to Regenia and hoped she was feeling the same. The woman had to see he was doing everything in his power to make her happy, from dates to short trips, and today he was planning to teach her how to make wine as she asked.
All of this was foreign to him. Giuseppe had never been so invested in making a damn woman happy, but he was with her. He should have been focused on Berardo, but as soon as she walked into the room, his mind went straight to her. What was this? Why was he feeling it now? Giu knew most would call it love. In his mind, he wasn't capable of loving others. "Sei bellissima stamattina, Uccellino. (You look beautiful this morning, little bird.)."
