The The Blood War
Chapter fourteen, Where it ends
———————————

-1921
Birmingham, England

Tara was gone, after her and Apollo got married she moved back with Apollo to Wales. Meanwhile back in Birmingham, Ada's husband Freddie had obtained the Spanish flu and later died. Near the whole of Birmingham was attending his funeral.

"I promised my friend, Freddie Throne, that it'd say a few words over his grave... if he should pass before me. I made this promise before he became my brother in law, when we were in France, fighting for the king" Tommy said. "Amen" Arthur said, he hated the word King now. "And in the end it wasn't war that took Freddie, pestilence took him. But Freddie passed on his soul and his spirit to a new generation before he was cruelly taken" Tommy finished.

After the funeral was over he walked Ada, they walked in silence before Tommy spoke. "We thought, now Freddie's gone, you might come back to Birmingham" Tommy said. Ada scoffed and looked over her shoulder. "God, do you know how funny it is that you've got chauffeurs in uniform now?" She said. "It's just for the occasion Ada" Tommy said. "Do you know how unfair it is that you've got four bugattis when half the country is starving?" She asked.

"So now they've made you ashamed of us eh?" Tommy asked and cleared his throat. He stopped walking and turned in front of her. "Sometimes when I think about how I used to be, it makes me embarrassed" Ada said. "Karl's with his cousins" Polly said, approaching the two as Tommy puffed out smoke from his cigarette. "Caught 'em trying to pinch flowers off a grave" Polly said with a slight smile, "Ada, are you coming home?" She asked. "I'm going home" Ada said.

"It's alright Pol. We make Ada embarrassed" Tommy said. "That's not what I said" Ada said. "There's another reason we want you home" Tommy said, "we're planning an expansion, I'm taking premises in London..." Tommy said but was cut off by Polly. "Tommy, it's a funeral business can wait" she said. "Polly, if Ada was weeping then I'd stop but she's not. The expansion means it's going to be dangerous to be a Shelby in London for a while" Tommy said.

"Yeah well, I'm not a Shelby anymore" Ada said, "and I'm not a throne now either, I'm free. I've got to get Karl home" Ada said before walking off. Tommy sighs, "I told you. Let me do it" Polly said. "It's alright. I'll have some men watch her house till the danger passes" Tommy said. A motorbike approached Arthur and then Arthur walked over to Tommy. "It's all alright?" Polly asked and then noticed Arthur.

"That'll be the bloody day" Polly said. After Arthur told Tommy the news, the Blinders drove back home to the town to see the Garrison blew up, windows broke and it was surrounded by ropes. "What the fuck happened?" Milly asked, walking over to the scene. "We don't know" Arthur said. Polly and Tommy went under the rope for further investigation. "It happened at exactly seven am" the police officer said, "Nobody saw anything. Our patrols were not in the area." Polly walks closer and scans the scene.

"Mr Shelby, have you got any idea who might've done it?" The police officer asked. "I'd say it was something to do with the gas" Tommy said, "it's just been fitted" Tommy handed the police man a bit of paper. Polly was about to walk through the doors but the officer stopped her, "Madam, the structure's not yet declared safe" He said. Polly walked to the doors anyway and picked up something green. She turned round and walked back out, "this is all over the place" she walked over to Tommy and handed him the green paper.

"Confetti" Polly said. "You can go" Tommy said to the officer. "Right" he walked off. "Who?" Polly asked, "who did this to us?"

Tommy later went to the black Lion to get a drink. "Whiskey, Irish" He said as he stood at the bar. The barman poured him the whiskey and Tommy threw a coin on the bar to have it pushed back at him. "I heard there was a bit of a bang in your side of town" the bartender said, he had a northern Irish accent. "Gas and electric don't mix" Tommy said, taking a sip of the whiskey, "who would have thought they would eh?" Tommy asked. "How's business otherwise Mr Shelby?"he asked.
