The Blood War Chapter seven,the one that got away ----------------------
-1919 Birmingham, England
John and Arthur began to dig into the soil of the grave and Milly saw out of the corner of her eye Grace and Campbell. "Tommy what the fuck is he doing here?" Arthur asked. "I'll handle him" Tommy said, walking away. Milly followed him to Campbell and Grace. "Sir-" Milly began but Tommy cut her off. "Sir?" Tommy asked. "You never told him did you?" Campbell asked.
"Tell me what?" Tommy asked. "Do you want to tell him or should I?" Campbell asked. Milly didn't speak. "Millicent Burgess isn't all she says she is, neither is Grace. They are both actively working under me for the Birmingham police" Campbell said. "You lying bitch" Tommy said. Milly didn't know what she could say to make any of this go away.
"Get the fuck out of my sight, both of you" Tommy said, turning his back to the girls. Milly tried to reach out for his hand but she missed. "Are you going to talk?" Campbell asked. "I have nothing to say to you" Milly said, walking passed the two of them. "I take it you know about Kimber too?" Grace asked. "Oh yes" Campbell said, as he watched the boys dig.
"All the guns have been dug up for you, take them and fuck off" Tommy said. Campbell hugged Grace and walked over to the grave. The brothers left the scene leaving just Campbell and Grace. He looked over the guns very intently. "All but one" Campbell said, hugging Grace. Grace pulled away then said, "then sir I resign my commission." "good" Campbell said, "good." He took his hands off her shoulders.
"So I am no longer your superior officer, and you are no longer my subordinate" Campbell said, taking off his hat. "And therefore, regulations permit me to offer you this" he reaches into his hat and pulled out a small box. "I'm a... I'm a simple but good man" Grace knew where this was going but she just stood there in shock.
"And my admiration for you has turned to love. I don't ask for love in return. Just, recognition that we are like minds with shared values" Campbell takes a step closer. "Grace, will you marry me?" Grace looked at him for a second before giving her answer. "Mr Campbell" Grace began as she closed the box in his hand. "You deserve better."
The smile on his face quickly faded. "Is it him between us?" Campbell asked. "Is it the beast that dug that grave, is it him!" He shouted outraged. "My resignation will be with you in the morning" Grace said, before turning her back and walking away.
Paige began to walk home when Arthur caught up to her. "Oi!" Arthur said. Paige turned to see him. "Did you know?" Arthur asked. "Know what?" Paige asked confused. "That Milly was an active police officer?" Arthur asked. Paige stood there froze for a second. "Since when?" Paige asked.
