Biana's POV:
As soon as Fitz left, Sophie ran upstairs, followed immediately by Keefe. "What happened?" Biana asked, looking at the place where Fitz was sitting a minute ago. Wylie edged out of the room uncomfortably.
"Well, I'm no relationship expert, but I'd say they broke up," Marella retorted. Everyone rolled their eyes.
"Why would Fitz and Sophie break up? They're perfect together," Linh asked Marella sadly, not getting the impact of matchmaking.
"Maybe because Fitz's name wasn't on Sophie's list, but Keefe was. Also the fact that Mr. Forkle won't make another list," Biana told her gently.
"I honestly don't see why she's upset. Sophie and Keefe are better together," Marella huffed. Biana rolled her eyes, but she honestly agreed.
"Well, as far as Sophie knows, she's the freak of the Lost Cities. She wouldn't believe that half of Foxfire is drooling over her, even though it's true," Biana explained.
"That's true. But Keefe is obviously smitten with her. I was tempted to make him tell her during Truth or Dare," Tam said, making them jump. They had forgotten that Dex, and Tam were still in the room.
As soon as Tam said that, Biana had to fight back a blush. She had been trying not to think about the dare, but now that he mentioned it, she couldn't stop thinking about Tam's kiss. He looked so adorably nervous when he was leaning in, and even though he pulled back almost immediately (much to Biana's dismay), she could tell that he didn't want to. She didn't want him to either. All she could picture were Tam's lips pressed against hers. But he probably didn't even care. It was a dare, after all.
Dex shook Biana out of her thoughts by saying, "Well, Keefe is probably doing that to Sophie right now, so don't worry Marella." With that, he put an arm across her shoulders and the both of them leaped back to Rimeshire.
Keefe's POV:
"Foster? Are you okay?" Keefe's voice came from her doorway.
Sophie sat up, wiped her tears away, and tried to smile at him. "You don't need to check on me, you should probably go home, Keefe," she tried to reassure him. Keefe shook his head, his face full of concern, anger, and something else.
"I know I don't need to check on you, but I want to," he told her. "It looked like you and Fitz broke up." The name brought tears to her eyes.
Sophie started to shake her head, but she knew that Keefe would sense her emotions anyway, so she nodded instead. "Yeah, he didn't want to date me and be considered a bad match," she told him.
The anger on Keefe's face was clear now. "I can't believe he would say that to you," he fumed, "Feeling his emotions when he was looking at you, he felt jealousy, admiration, and longing. I thought it was for you and that he really liked you, but I guess it all went out the window if it meant bringing the Vacker name down," he added miserably. What he didn't tell Sophie was that Fitz was feeling jealousy, probably because she was so powerful. After all, Fitz was the Golden Boy before she showed up. He also might have thought Sophie liked Keefe instead of him.
Sophie looked up at him. "If you were in that position, would you still date the girl you 'liked' no matter what, or would you dump her just like Fitz did?" she asked.
Keefe stared into her eyes. He couldn't believe she was even asking this. She must have really liked Fitz, even more than he already knew. "Of course, I wouldn't care whether I was a bad match. I would still date you- uh, her, no matter what," Keefe said firmly.
Sophie's expression changed, and Keefe felt a wave of confusion from her so strong, he felt dizzy. "What did you say?" she asked.
"I would still date the girl I liked," Keefe repeated. Then added, quietly, "I would still date you."
Keefe felt a mix of desire, happiness, guilt, and realization coming from her. Sophie stood up and walked over to him. She looked up into his eyes. "You would date me?" she asked softly. Keefe nodded.
Sophie stepped closer to him. "Really?" she asked disbelievingly. Keefe took Sophie's hand and gently slid her glove off. Sophie stepped even closer. Just as she opened her mouth to say something, Sophie's window shattered, and four black cloaked figures came into the room. One of them pulled out a melder and shot both of them in the head before they could scream for help, and the last thing Keefe saw was Sophie being carried out the window by one of the figures. Then everything went dark.
