~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Flashback ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was Sophie, no more than five or six years old, playing in the gardens with a boy who looked about two years older than her. He had the most stunning azure eyes, messy raven-black hair, and a wide smile as he looked at Sophie's younger self.
"Soph! I've got the curdleroots!" he whisper-yelled.
"Ruy! I got the ruckleberries!" Sophie squealed softly. Future Sophie gasped, realizing she was at a Neverseen hideout, planning something with Ruy Ignis, the psionpath. Sophie ran over to him and held out her tiny hands, giving the smelly berries to him. Both of them tiptoed over to a room in the southwest wing of what looked like a giant mansion. Quickly, they dumped the curdleroots in hidden compartments in the room and the ruckleberries in a sandwich. Then, they ran back outside and hid behind a tree. A while later, Fintan came along and gagged as he smelled the air. He grabbed his sandwich and walked out. He took a bite, and instantly swelled up, looking old, wrinkly, and smelled like feet. He turned around in their direction and called out, "YOU AGAIN!!" He ran over to them and dragged them out by the hair, straight to their parents. Sophie shrieked and judo- flipped Fintan to the ground. Then she grabbed Ruy's hand and they both ran away as fast as their legs could carry them. Gethen, who was going over to the room, stopped them in their tracks holding their shoulders.
"You two seriously pranked Fintan again after last time?" he demanded, shaking his head. He kissed the top of Sophie's head and gave her and Ruy a little push toward a hidden door. "I won't tell him I saw you," He promised. Sophie and Ruy bolted to the door and escaped as fast as they could. Fintan was shouting in the distance, still sounding furious. Ruy led Sophie to a spot in the gardens that she hadn't seen before. But when they got there, they were ambushed by people wearing all black. One elf took her by her wrist and pulled out his light leaping crystal. He smelled like feet, and his hands were all wrinkled like Fintan's. He had obviously eaten ruckleberries, too. He held up a leaping crystal and dragged Sophie into the light. They both shimmered away while Sophie called for Ruy, who had cried for Sophie. And in a second she was gone. Away from home. Away from the beautiful spot in the gardens with Ruy. She was in what seemed to be a dark, cold cellar with people staring at her like they expected her to do something.
"Where am I," Sophie wailed,"I want to go home," she started crying before they could respond.
"You are where you belong, little Moonlark." one of the hooded figures said.
"What? What do you mean? I'm not a moonlark! You have to let me go home. Please!" She begged. Her cries fell of deaf ears. Suddenly she started to yawn as a sedative was shoved down her throat. Her vision started to become blurry and she couldn't keep her eyes open. The last thing she remembered was the smell of ruckleberries as someone put two fingers on her temples before she drifted away from reality.
Sophie POV:
Sophie opened her eyes. She wasn't in the unknown past anymore, she was in the present, where she had just found out that her father was Gethen. She wasn't raised with humans, she grew up with her biological family. She was a Telepath, Teleporter, Enhancer, Polyglot, Inflictor, Psionipath, and a Shade, too. She remembered training Ruy and her friends, who knew who and what she was. Who loved her for it, and never judged her. Sophie felt a fierce stab of longing, knowing everything was gone. She didn't know what to believe anymore. How could it all be a lie? Sophie tried to make explanations for this, but she knew she couldn't make herself believe this. Maybe her mind was playing tricks on her? Maybe the Neverseen had knocked her out, and had put these memories into her brain? She stopped herself from escalating, she felt her eyes start to water and a single tear slid down her already damp cheek. Everyone was watching her, and she felt their eyes bore into her with pity. But at that moment, she didn't care. She knew that this was not some trick by the Neverseen. It was her past, her true past, and the Black Swan kidnapped her and took it from her, along with all the abilities, instead making them manifest one by one.
Ruy's POV:
It was horrible sitting in his uncomfortable cloak, pretending to be any other member of the order that didn't care that Soph (his pet name for her) was remembering her time with us. He wanted to wrap his arms around Sophie and tell her it was going to be okay. That he knew it wasn't her fault, if anything, it was his because it was his idea to prank Fintan that day and he was also the one that led her down to their special spot in the gardens. They used to hang out there every day, just enjoying each other's company and talking about training, before she was taken by the Black Swan. he was careful not to think those thoughts throughout the years, because he knew what guilt could do to an elf. Even though that wouldn't apply to him, because he wasn't one. But he still avoided thinking about Sophie in general, mainly because he was afraid he would go storming into the Black Swan's hideouts and trigger her memories on his own if he did. That was the reason he always wore an addler. If Sophie searched anyone's memories and saw his face, the Neverseen suspected it would be enough to trigger all her memories of her past life with them, and that would ruin their plans. He also decided that it would be too overwhelming. He felt useless looking at her breaking down from the shock. He wondered if this was enough to shatter her mind, if it wasn't he decided it would be rather close. Sophie had practically started sobbing. It took everything in him not to run to her and wipe away her tears. Gethen told everyone to leave the room so that she could have some time to herself.
Sophie's POV:
Gethen told her to take her time readjusting and consider rejoining the Neverseen now that she knows the truth. He gave her some time alone in her old room, which she shared with Glimmer. He also gave her some slumberberry tea along with mallowmelt, which she accepted gratefully. Gethen told her she could sleep on it if she wanted to, and that he would somehow make this look like the Black Swan asked her to stay over at night for some kind of breakthrough, so her friends, along with Edaline and Grady, wouldn't worry. He also reassured her by telling her she always had a spot in the Neverseen if she was truly committed and not a spy. The rest passed away in a blur. Sophie agreed to sleep on it, knowing that she couldn't deal with the Black Swan after what she learned, especially not while she was still getting memories.
