Sophie POV:
Over the course of 2 weeks, the Neverseen made it look like Sophie was on a mission for the Black Swan. Meanwhile, Sophie and Ruy were training together. For fighting, and for strengthening their minds. Sophie also learned how to control her new abilities. Ruy helped her, and she was grateful for it. They became really good friends and Sophie had started to wonder if they would ever be as good friends as they were when they were five, though she hoped to be more than that. Ruy listened to her complain about the hideout, how she hoped her friends were safe and not looking for her, because they also didn't know who they were working for. Sophie had felt guilty about complaining about missing her friends to someone who had lost her for nine years. She realized that he might be jealous of her friends, who she loved with all her heart, even though they are with the Black Swan. Was she supposed to hate them now since they were on opposite sides? But she couldn't hate them, not when they were always by her side. When they'd been through so much for her, not when they almost died for her. She would just need some time. Time to figure things out. Then she would be a true Neverseen member again. But even as she told herself this every day, she couldn't imagine turning evil. No, not evil. Just willing to make the hard choices. Like turning against her friends. Over the course of two weeks, Ruy and Sophie became good friends. They trusted each other, and they formed a sort of bond.
She wondered if Keefe was worried about her. Or maybe Fitz. She immediately scratched that thought out of her mind. Fitz had heartlessly broken up with her over the stupid Vacker name and legacy. She was focusing on happy things now.
Glimmer woke Sophie up the next morning, screaming in her ear.
"SOPHIE!!! WAKE UP!!! IT'S TIME FOR THE SWEETHEART BALL" She yelled way too loudly at five in the morning. Sophie groaned and rolled over.
"What? Glimmer go back to sleep, it's too early for this!" Sophie demanded, still half-asleep. The Sweetheart Ball was a ball the Neverseen was hosting to recruit new members. All guests would be wearing masks to protect their identity, but the Neverseen members wouldn't. They wanted to show that the Black Swan is too scared to even show their faces, but the Neverseen is proud to be on their side in the war.
"But Ruy asked you out two days ago! We need to get you ready. It's not everyday that a boy asks you out! Especially ask nine years late," she added.
"What do you mean? The ball's at 5:00 in the evening, why do we need to get up so early?" Sophie asked.
"Umm... Have you seen the state of your hair? You need all day to get ready if you want to look at least decent! And that's definitely not what we're aiming for. We want you to look so pretty, you'll knock all the boys off their feet at the ball. Especially Ruy" Glimmer winked.
Sophie's eyes popped open. "No, not another makeover!" She jumped out of bed, running downstairs and into the kitchen. Glimmer followed her and tried to slow her down by blinding her with balls of light. Sophie took a deep breath and weaved shadows around her, disguising her. She had been practicing, and she was getting better. Not as good as Tam, of course. She wished he would train her, but she quickly dismissed the thought. That wouldn't be possible.
"SOPHIE!!! YOU NEED THIS! STOP RUNNING AWAY FROM ME OR I'LL HAVE GETHEN ASSIGN YOU BATHROOM DUTY!" Glimmer threatened.
"GIRLS!! IT'S SIX IN THE MORNING! WHAT ARE YOU GUYS DOING UP SO EARLY?? RUY AND I ARE TRYING TO SLEEP!!" Alvar yelled from the other room. His voice was all scratchy, as if he just woke up, which he had. "SORRY IF GLIMMER'S WAKING YOU UP FOR THE BALL, SOPHIE, I KNOW YOU DON'T LIKE TO DRESS UP!"
"HEY IT WASN'T ALL ME! IF SOPHIE HAD COOPERATED, WE WOULDN'T BE HERE!!!" Glimmer shouted back.
"IF YOU ALL DON'T SHUT UP AND SLEEP RIGHT NOW I WILL BURN THIS PLACE TO THE GROUND!!!"Fintan hollered, then realizing Vespera would kill him for it, he added, "AFTER I CANCEL THE BALL!", effectively silencing their bickering. Sophie shot Glimmer a smug look and bolted for the stairs. Glimmer sighed and got back into bed. Sophie smirked, but Glimmer chasing her around brought back memories of the sleepover, when Biana, Linh, and Marella had given her a makeover. She remembered the truth or dare, and Fitz almost kissing her in the living room. She felt a pang of wistfulness and wished she could go back in time to that day, repeating it again and again. Back to a time when she didn't know everything she knows now. She shook her head as if physically filtering her thoughts. Finally, Sophie gave in and closed her eyes, dreaming she was back at Havenfield with her friends and family.
