Sophie POV:

When Sophie woke up, the first thing she noticed was someone that was next to her. Make that two someones. Or three? Sophie couldn't really tell, but she was relieved to have some company, wherever she was. Or that was, until she realized they were all wearing black cloaks with a white eye on them. Keefe! The last thing she remembered, she was in her room with Keefe, about to tell him how much he meant to her, and the next thing she knew, someone had shot her. Thinking about it now, Sophie realized the black cloaked figures were the neverseen.

"So the Moonlark is finally awake," A voice sneered. Sophie tried to respond, but a piece of cloth was covering her mouth. She also noticed that her arms and legs were tied.

The voice spoke again. "Nice to see you again Sophie. Didn't expect to be tied up, did you. Well, the last time we kidnapped you, it didn't go too well. But your little Black Swan friends can't help you this time," Sophie tried to place the voice in her head, but couldn't. She figured it was one of the lower members of the order. Surely not Lady Gisela, Vespera, Fintan, Gethen, or Alvar.

Sophie closed her eyes and tried to stay calm. Breathe in, breathe out, she mentally chanted. But it didn't work. Finally, she gave up and reached deep down, channeling her anger.

"I wouldn't try that if I were you, Sophie," A voice broke through her concentration. But this time it was a voice she knew. Gethen. Now Sophie was angry. Along with Brant, Gethen was also one of the neverseen who had first kidnapped Sophie. He was the one who had tried to get past her blocking and punished her for every telepathic call for help.

Sophie took a deep breath and sent out a call to Fitz. Although they had just broken up and weren't exactly talking right now, she needed his help. Besides, he would answer her if her life was in danger right? Wrong.

Just then, one of the hooded figures came forward and took down his hood. Sophie's stomach dropped. The hooded figure had perfect brown hair, a movie-star worthy smile, and teal eyes. Fitz.

Sophie's eyes widened. Fitz stepped forward and took down her gag as she tried to speak. His fingers brushed her cheeks, reminding her of the way he almost kissed her at the sleepover. But his touch didn't make her heart pound faster. Instead, all she felt was disgust. Sophie flinched as Fitz stepped back. "Don't touch me," she snapped. All Sophie felt was anger for how Fitz had acted the other day. She wasn't trying to be selfish, but she was willing to be a bad match for him, but all he cared about was the Vacker name. Now that he was a part of the Neverseen, Sophie's anger increased. "What about not bringing any shame to the Vacker family?" she asked bitterly.

"You're acting like Alvar, I thought you hated him," Sophie added. Just the thought of Fitz joining the Neverseen made her gag. It was revolting.

Fitz wouldn't meet her eyes. "It's for the best. The council isn't good at making any decisions, and the Black Swan only wants to wait around for things to happen. Besides, they only care about their precious moonlark," he told her. Sophie looked away. She was the moonlark. Had Fitz been thinking about this whenever he was around the Black Swan? Sophie contemplated. She stared up at Fitz again. "How long has this been going on?" She demanded. Fitz muttered, "Ever since I brought you to the Lost Cities."What? Fitz has been putting on an act the entire time? Sophie's mind rushed to times when they were together, making plans to defeat the Neverseen. She had never seen it coming. No wonder the Neverseen always seemed to be one step ahead of their plans. Fitz had been leaking information the whole time. Sophie glared at him, "When I get out of here, I will make sure you lose," Fitz chuckled. "I'd like to see you try," Sophie was speechless. Everything was a lie. Everything he had ever said to her. Every promise, every word against the Neverseen. All lies. Tears welled up in her eyes and she tried so hard not to cry, but they weren't sad tears. They were angry ones.

She closed her eyes and sent out one desperate call out for help to Keefe, but she wasn't sure who she could trust anymore. Biana was out of the question. She might have known about her brothers all along. What if she was a part of the Neverseen too? She was a Vanisher after all. Dex wouldn't be a part of this. But she didn't want to have to make him risk his life for her again. Even if Keefe had almost gotten killed way too many times, she was sure that he was on her side. Unless he was faking too. Sophie couldn't tell who was on whose side anymore. It was all such a big muddled mess. It was too confusing to figure out. Thinking of Keefe, she thought about what he had said to her right before they got kidnapped.

But before she could follow that train of thought, she realized something. Fitz could get past her blocking. Or could he? Now that she knew he was with the Neverseen, did her consciousness trust him anymore? She really hoped it didn't. If it did, Fitz would know that she was calling for help and would have told the others by now. Sophie poured her mental energy into building as thick of a barrier as she could create. It must have worked, because Fitz sighed and shook his head at her, rubbing his temples. She scowled at him, feeling a twinge of satisfaction. Sophie and Fitz locked eyes. Something felt wrong. It was all too sudden. There must have been some signs that she might have missed. If only she could have caught them and found out earlier. Now Fitz knew all kinds of information about the Black Swan. He even swore fealty!

Gethen interrupted their silent staring contest, "Well, you might have expected Keefe joining the Neverseen, but never Fitz? What a pity. He's one of our most prominent members. You put too much trust in him, and now you have to pay for it," he sneered. Sophie felt like breaking his nose again with one of Dex's creations - the sucker punch. Instead, she leveled her gaze at him, trying to look indifferent. "What do you want with me? You won't get any information, and you don't even need that. You already have Fitz for that," She spat his name out like it was a disease. Gethen laughed. "That's not what we need you for," he told her. "You will get your priorities straight and join the winning side."

Sophie scoffed and glared at him. "If you really think I would join the Neverseen, you really need to think again. You guys are insane criminals." Gethen chuckled.

"I'm sure you'll change your mind once you see what we have in store for you." He told her surely. "We can give you more information in five minutes than the Black Swan would offer in a lifetime. Besides, wouldn't you want to find out who your parents are? I bet you hate how the Black Swan always keeps secrets from you and leaves you out of everything. The Neverseen's not like that." Gethen promised. Fitz looked uneasy. Something about this whole thing seemed weird. It didn't feel real. With Fitz just showing up in the Neverseen, and the whole 'make the little Moonlark useful' scheme. Then Sophie remembered what else Gethen had said.

"You know who my parents are?" Sophie ran through the times when she had practically begged the Black Swan to tell her, but they wouldn't for 'complicated reasons'. When the Black Swan had created Project Moonlark, they kept all records of it top secret, with no one but Mr. Forkle knowing. Or the Forkle Twins, she mentally amended.

"That's right, Moonlark, I know who your parents are, and if you join the Neverseen, with no tricks up your sleeves, I'll tell you who they are," Gethen bargained.

"How are you different from the Black Swan, then, if you won't tell me until I join? They're my parents, I deserve to know," she demanded.

Gethen sighed. "Fine. You want me to tell you? Okay. But you can't start panicking. Alright?" Sophie nodded reluctantly. She wasn't sure if she would be ready for the shock she was about to go through. What if her parents were someone she knew the whole time, or worse, someone like Vespera? Sophie silently panicked. But after a while of consideration, she decided no matter who her parents were, that wouldn't change who she was, or who her friends are. But then again, she didn't want a criminal or someone who's hurt her or her friends as her parents. "It depends on who they are," she warned.

"I suppose that's only fair," Gethen agreed. He leaned in close to her and whispered, "I am your father, Sophie."
