Shen Yuan was glad to see, or, well, not see Shang Qinghua. He was informed of his leave of absence and couldn't help but feel proud of his work.

Back at Mobei Jun's palace, however, things weren't going as well. Shang Qinghua had declared that he would reside at the palace for a while but had yet to explain the reasoning behind his decision. He wasn't sure how to talk to Mobei Jun about his troubles.

He supposed they were lovers now, between the needy make-outs and the cuddling, he thought that was probably the best way to describe their current relationship.

But if they were lovers, why was it so hard to talk about things?

Simple.

Shang Qinghua was shy and Mobei Jun was too quiet.

So of course, this would lead to later issues, such as the one they currently faced. Both were anxious and uneasy yet neither of them had the guts to express it.

Shang Qinghua had been bottling up his troubles for much longer than he had promised his friend. Why was it so hard to just say something?

On the other hand, Mobei Jun was also worried about how uneasy Shang Qinghua was around him. He assumed there was still some lingering fear concerning their master-servant relationship. He was never particularly good with words or feelings for that matter.

Both of them were sick of waiting for the other to say or do something.

Shang Qinghua had been laying in his bed staring at the ceiling, a warm overcoat lazily draped around him. His fingers were tapping the mattress non stop. He was impatient, he needed to talk, he needed to see his king. He groaned loudly.

Fuck it.

He was going to see Mobei Jun. He jumped of the warm mattress, shivering slightly as the accumulated warmth of the bed left him. He rushed out of his room, coat swaying behind him. He could hear the tapping of his light, cultivator feet on the icy floor and the loud thumping of his heart against his chest.

He tried to calm himself down by taking a deep breath but it didn't seem to help.

Shang Qinghua continued his trek in an attempt to find his lover in the maze of a palace he had grown surprisingly accustomed to.

He turned a sharp corner, heart pounding, mind racing but suddenly came to an abrupt halt. The familiar frosty aura that always seemed to swallow him whole.

The man looked up to see the beautiful face he had so carefully and painstakingly describes in his novel.

Mobei Jun.

He looked just as dishevelled as he.

"We need to talk." They said simultaneously. Shang Qinghua couldn't help but think jinx When the words left their mouths at the same time.

"Right, your room then...?"

"Hm"

The king replied gently while pulling Shang Qinghua's fur coat back over his shoulder. The brunette, not having noticed how his cloak was basically falling off of him, blushed slightly. It was always the little gestures that had his heart doing somersaults. They walked to his room without another peep. The atmosphere was so awkward it made Shang Qinghua cringe.

Once they entered the bedroom the brunette was the first to speak.

"You wanted to talk to me?"

His tone was hesitant but Mobei Jun held his hand reassuringly.

"hm." ( lan wangji 2.0 lmao... or maybe lan wangji is Mobei Jun 2.0...)

Shang Qinghua nodded his head, indicating that he was ready to listen.

"You... seem uncomfortable... around me."

Shang Qinghua blinked his eyes in confusion, that thought had never crossed his mind. He thought about it for a good minute, recalling several instances where he would flinch away from Mobei Jun. He wasn't open with him either.

"I'm sorry."

He finally spoke.

"I'm not used to this, I mean, all the time I've known you..."

Mobei Jun covered his mouth with a cold hand.

"I apologise, I am not an ideal lover. I am not ideal in any respect. The way I've treated you so far..."

It was Shang Qinghua's turn to interrupt him. He removed the hand from his mouth.

"You are more than ideal to me! I can tell you've been doing your best and I love that about you."

The sheer adoration Mobei Jun felt for this man at that very moment was almost overwhelming. Both of them flushed a deep shade of red as the cultivator's words sunk in.

"The truth is I am struggling to keep up with everything... You are a king that is respected and feared by everyone who has heard your name. And yes, I may be a peak Lord but I have nothing to show for it."

Shang Qinghua paused; he wasn't sure if now was the right time to talk about his troubles.

"What I'm trying to say is that I have immense respect for you, and I... I really want to be worthy of standing by your side, but it's hard."

The brunette fidgeted with his hands nervously as Mobei Jun gave a long sigh.

"You needn't prove yourself. I love you for you."

The king placed a small kiss on his lover's temple and Shang Qinghua leaned against his shoulder.

"I love you too."

He whispered shyly.

And that was that. The cultivator felt relieved he thought he should listen to Shen Qingqiu more often.

At the same time, in another place-

Shen Qingqiu had been sitting on Luo Binghe's lap per his request, drinking freshly brewed tea.

"How do you think Shang Qinghua and Mobei Jun are doing?"

He asked out of the blue. Luo Binghe thought for a moment before answering coolly.

"They are doing far better than you'd think."

The words flew over Shen Yuan's head, he was surprised by the in his husband's voice. He loved it when he dropped the whiny childish act, his voice was much deeper and far more attractive. He turned on the spot and grasped his demon's face.

"Talk like that again."

Luo Binghe was surprised at the sudden change in his shizun's attitude.

"Like what?"

Shen Yuan blushed, there it was again. He couldn't help but press his lips against his husband's.

Spoiler: neither of them got any sleep that night
