This wasn't like Mobei Jun, this wasn't like him at all. He had been neglecting all of his work and spent most of his time pacing back and forth in his room. It felt like he was being swallowed whole by worry. He occasionally visited Shang Qinghua's empty room and simply stood there. Every object in that room witnessed Shang Qinghua's existence, which was not something the ice demon wished to lose.
His subordinates were at a loss, the king was far behind on work. Yet they feared him too much to reprimand him. However, Mobei Jun was aware of all of this and even then, he couldn't bring himself to get anything done. Why was he so affected by all of this? Why was he so overcome by fear whenever he thought of living without Shang Qinghua? Why did his eyes water and his heart ache when he remembered Shang Qinghua's body going limp?
No matter how hard he tried he never managed to answer those questions.
He was sitting on the edge of his bed, head clutched in his hand. It had been days and those foul cultivators still hadn't contacted him; he was beginning to lose hope. He wished he could go back in time and protect Shang Qinghua.
..............
Shang Qinghua.
He repeated his name in his head like a mantra for fear of forgetting it.
Mobei Jun replayed the moment Shang Qinghua rushed in front of him over and over again in his head. He now realized just how loyal Shang Qinghua was. He had selflessly saved him countless times and the only way he had repaid him was with a punch to the face. He felt so horrible and the longer he spent with no news of his servant's condition, the worse he felt.
He had been staring off into space, sitting on his throne. The world seemed so empty without the small cultivator. He wondered if he would ever see him again. If he woke up, he probably wouldn't want to see Mobei Jun ever again. In the past, he wouldn't have cared about the brunette's feelings and would have simply gone after him and brought him back to his palace. Now was different however, now he wondered if Shang Qinghua would be happier without him, and if he was then he would stay away from him. He would do anything if it meant he could keep smiling. He snapped back to reality when he heard a familiar voice call to him. It was Luo Binghe. He expected to be scolded for neglecting his work, but the scolding never came. There was a jade amulet in the throne room that the two kings used to communicate. The words that left the amulet echoed in the empty hall.
"Shizun asked me to inform you that your servant has awoken. He is on Qian Cao peak if you wish to see him."
Mobei Jun was stunned. He thought he must have hallucinated, but even then he would take the chance.
He wasted no time in getting to Cang Qiong mountain, he got up from his lousy position on his throne and opened a portal. He appeared inside the room he remembered Shang Qinghua had been checked by the two peak lords. He wasn't here. Shang Qinghua wasn't here, and Mobei Jun didn't know where else he could be. His mind was racing as he rushed out of the bamboo house. He let out a breath he hadn't realized he had been holding in when he saw the brunette standing outside, he rushed toward him. A huge weight had been lifted off of his shoulders when he held the man in his arms. This time he would make sure nothing happened to him; he would keep Shang Qinghua close. He swore he would never lose him again. Mobei Jun could feel the brunette shake slightly, something wet fell on his cold hands. Was he crying? Mobei Jun was at a loss, he didn't know what to say or do. He had never comforted someone before so all he could come up with was a warning, words that expressed his worry.
In truth, even if Shang Qinghua did something reckless again then Mobei Jun would be there to protect him.
After a few minutes, the cultivator began to calm down. A cool breeze blew past them, the last rays of sunlight shown, creating heavily distorted shadows. It was getting late and the demon knew it would be best to let Shang Qinghua go for the time being. He unwound his arms from around the man's waist, but a small hand stopped him. The brunette turned around and looked at the king for the first time that day. His hair was loose and full of tangles, and his eyes were red and puffy from crying. He looked pale and Mobei Jun swore he had lost some weight. His brown eyes looked into his but quickly looked back down at the ground. Mobei Jun's gaze never left the man.
"Please don't go my king."
Shang Qinghua was still shaking he glanced back up at the demon shyly and quickly retracted his hand from his king's arm. He looked as if he had just committed something blasphemous. Of course, Mobei Jun was probably the reason for his shock. The frown on his face was anything but reassuring so Shang Qinghua's reaction was only natural. He fell to his knees in a desperate attempt at redemption.
"My deepest apologies, this foolish one was not thinking and-"
A strong hand covered his mouth, preventing him from saying anything.
"I will stay as long as you so wish."
The brunette was so shocked by this new side of Mobei Jun he nearly choked on air.
"Who are you? Where is my king?"
He gave him a skeptical look and poked at his face. The ice demon deadpanned. Was him offering something so unusual? Shang Qinghua's behavior made him chuckle. He picked the man up bridal style and watched as his face flushed a deep shade of red.
How could someone be so handsome?! This has to be a crime.
The brunette buried his face in his hands and leaned into his king's chest. Mobei Jun's heart stuttered at the sight. This man truly would be the end of him.
