Holidays weren't for rest when you were a Death Eater. And Regulus already knew this. The day before Christmas he arrived at his cousin's manor for one of those meetings. He greeted her and her husband of course, and was soon joined by Evan Rosier.
"Regulus. Long time no see," said Evan as he shook his hand in a polite manner.
"Evan. Good to see you," he told him, with a smile. A genuine smile. Of course he was happy to meet Octavia's brother.
"You guys are here already," suddenly said Jaden from behind.
"Better be early, you know that damn well," told him the older boy.
"I know I know no need to remind me, thank you."
Jaden had indeed arrived late once at one of the meetings. The Dark Lord was luckily in a good mood but his words were enough to remind the boy he had to be on time.
"So far, are the holidays alright?" wondered Evan as he started directing himself to the meeting room.
"It's fine for me. Father-in-law invited me to dinner on Christmas. I'll have to make a good impression."
"Oh man, you'll be with Mason."
"Yeah luckily. And with Lilah. I'm glad I'll be knowing a few people," sighed the boy.
"What about you Reg? You're awfully quiet," suddenly exclaimed Evan, while placing an arm around his shoulders in a friendly, even brotherly manner. Evan was the closest thing he had to a brother now.
"There's nothing special," he only told him, eyeing the boy suspiciously. He wondered whether Octavia had talked to him.
"Regulus! Lucky boy!" exclaimed a voice from behind. He turned around to see Mason Yaxley walking towards them.
"Nice to see you too," only replied the boy in a neutral tone.
"No need to act innocent. Lilah told me. Something's going on between you and Octavia, am I right?" wondered the blond boy, his lips forming an amused smile.
Regulus' lips twitched a little at this. He couldn't control it, it was automatic but he tried to remain expressionless.
"Oh why do you suddenly look so happy!" teased Evan with a laugh.
"That's the Octavia effect," rejoined Jaden.
"There's no Octavia effect," muttered the boy as he tried to remain calm.
"You're so cute," told him Mason.
"Anyway, what about you? Have you found the love of your life yet?"
"Oh I wish I had. But you know, it's complicated for men like me," sighed the older boy. He didn't look particularly affected, the irony was easily noticeable in his tone of voice but Regulus could guess it was indeed complicated. And for a moment he was confused as to why it was more difficult for "men like him". And then he understood, maybe he knew already.
"For the mean time I'll be the love of your life you ugly daft," told him Evan with a laugh.
"Hurry up boys! You know the Dark Lord hates waiting!" said a screeching voice from behind them.
"We're still early Bella," sighed Mason.
"Then instead of idling around go take a seat," she snapped at him, sending a deathly glare his way that made shivers run down his spine.
"Your cousin's frightening," murmured the boy to Regulus as they entered the large room.
They greeted the Dark Lord before sitting on the opposite side of the table. The man would rather have his closest followers sitting around him. The meeting started a few minutes later. They shared news, planned missions, discussed and discussed. At this point, Regulus had already zoned out. However he got suddenly called out.
