I look at myself in the mirror 10 minutes before we're supposed to leave. I put on a simple white linen dress with some heels. I know I didn't have to wear anything special but this felt appropriate for today.
I get in the car with my parents and all our things as they are leaving after everything is finished and I'm leaving too I guess.
We arrive at the office where I first met with Grayson. We drive up to the office where we're supposed to meet.
My father opens the door for me and my mom and we walk inside. Grayson is already here, with an attorney and his father and a lady by his side which I'm guessing is his mom. She gives me a sweet smile which I return.
"Everything is ready, you just need to sign these 3 papers and then the parents need to sign these" he gives out our papers and Grayson passes me the pen to sign first and I do and then after me he signs.
"That looks to be it" the attorney says looking over his papers. And then puts them down "now the only thing you need to do is to change your documents to your new last name within 5 days" he says looking at me.
"We will get that taken care of" Grayson says and the attorney nods. "Then congratulations guys" he says and slides the documents away.
That's it? It didn't even take 5 minutes for me to sign my life away for a year. The attorney leaves and I tell goodbye to my parents when they leave.
"Kate" the lady is calling my name and I turn to look at her "I'm Helen, Graysons mom" she introduces herself.
"It's nice to meet you" I say, she seems nice.
"Thank you for doing this, it means a lot" she says and I say "it means a lot to my family too"
She smiles and with that says her goodbye and leaves with her husband as well. Until I'm left alone with my husband.
"So what now?" I ask.
"You packed your things?" He asks and looks at his wrist watch.
"Yes" I respond and try to avoid his eye contact.
"Then we leave too" he says and opens the doors for me to the office and we get down to the car.
Grayson is on his phone the whole road while I'm looking out the window and taking in the last moments which feel like are my last seconds of freedom. It's only for a year I tell myself.
My phone vibrates and I look at the screen. It's Levi. I wasn't expecting him to text me.
Levi: how are you doing cherry pie?
Kate: Good, there's actually something I need to tell you.
Levi: oh good I need to tell you something too.
Kate: what is it?I look out the window as we pull up to a private airport and the doors are opened for me. I step out and watch as the people carry out our bags from the car and into the airport. Grayson leads the way inside the airport and we walk out to a private jet.
I climb up the steps and step into the private jet where the flight attendant is greeting me already. And I walk inside to take the big white leather chair next to the window. I mean all the chairs are next to a window here.
I look at my phone as Grayson settles in further away from me.
Levi: I actually haven't been honest with you. I've met someone, and she's amazing, and I want to try things out with her. I hope you understand cherry pie, I do love you, you'll always have a dear place in my heart.
I seem to reread the message a couple of times and I'm left on a pause. I've never felt so dumb in my life. Can I maybe step out of this plane and lay under it's wheels? He just dumped me?
