chapter 1
11 years ago (na'teya pov)
today was the day. after 6 years of training i had finally earned the responsibility to fly an ikran. in most forest clans you would have to wait till you turn 13 to choose an ikran but in the kekunan clan we begin our iknimaya as soon as we can stand and walk steadily, this is because ikrans are our main source of transport. we have always had a strong connection with the ikrans since the first songs.
i am climbing up the vines on the hallelujah mountains with the other young hunters of my clan including my best friends za'tary and ze'i. we have been friends since our first training lesson, we were learning how to use a bow and arrow with toy arrows, i hit ze'i in the back with the arrow, za'tary saw and stared laughing, since then we became inseparable.
finally after a long and difficult journey we had made it to the cliff edge where all the ikrans lay. i was quite nervous, all my training had led up to this, my parents and teachers knew i was ready but it was still very scary, i didn't want to disappoint any of them.
i watched all my friends struggle and get thrown off their ikrans but the eventually got it and were now all flying around. it was my turn and scared is an underestimate of how i was feeling. i walk around with my rope in my hand and looking for an ikran, i hiss at a few but they all fly away.
i hear and large screech from behind me, i turn around to see this gorgeous pale blue and pink ikran hissing at me. i knew i had been chosen. i didnt waste a second, i wrap my rope around her mouth and climb onto her back making tsaheylu (the bond).
i immediately grab onto her and push off the edge joining everyone else in the sky, not long after my parents come and join me. we fly to our spirit tree our most sacred place to every na'vi clan. once we arrive we connect and i see a vision.
the vision:
i can feel the wind in my hair and im riding around my home with my best friends, i feel so free and happy the only thing i notice is we are older we look around 13 or 14. it makes me happy knowing even after all these years we are still so close and happy.
but just as i thought everything was good i look up to see some sort of metal thing above the clouds.
vision ends
i am so confused. what was that? why was it hear? my mind is flooded with thoughts but i am quickly snapped out of them when my mother begins to speak.
"so what are you going to name her, ite (daughter)?"
"what?" i reply, very confused
"your ikran, what is her name" my mother repeated
"oh um i haven't really thought about that, i really like the name zuri, what do you think?" i suggested
"that is a lovely name" my father said patting me on the head
my parents start telling me stories from when they first made the bond with their ikrans. we climb back onto our ikrans and make the bond before flying back to our family hut to collect some things before flying to home base.
my family hut was gifted to us by the clan after my mother became pregnant with my brother. they gifted it to us because it was safe for my mother during her pregnancy and the war.
it was built hidden in the forest, far to high in the trees for the sky people to find. once we arrived we had grabbed some extra clothes and weapons before leaving again.
it was not safe to be here at night, the sky people were getting smarter and exploring more area. a family near us lost their father because the sky people found his hut. since then the olo'eyktan ordered everyone to stay in the mountains for safety, we called this place homebase.
when we arrived at home base we broke the bond, allowing our ikrans to fly freely for the night, my parents and i then walked to our family tent we were currently staying in. when we walk in i see my brother preparing dinner in celebration for completing the first rites of passage phase.
tomorrow i will be completing my uniltaron (dream hunt), it is a highly spiritual ceremony practiced by every na'vi who it completing their rites of passage. the dream hunt is where na'vi seek their dream hunt. if i succeed i will move onto the third and last phase of the rites of passage. the ceremony to adulthood, execpt since i am so young i will have to wait till i am 16 to complete that.
we will still have the ceremony though and celebrate our rebirth, when we earn our place among the people forever.
my brother had gathered berries earlier that day for the evening meal, and they were incredibly juicy. they were the best berries i have ever eaten they had a delightful flavor sensation as i tasted them i went to bed that night, happiness filling my heart. but the thing about happiness, it can vanish in a heartbeat. and that it did.
