Context:
The main idea for this unit was to understand that creative nonfiction entertains an audience with the truth. Writers explain real-life episodes using unique writing structures, diverse vocabulary, and exploring how people may see the same scenario differently. For the following assignment, students created a word web that associated appropriate emotional words connected to a topic.Using the map, we then drafted our creative nonfiction pieces. We utilized the subject from the word web and wrote the story using a particular tone based on one of the emotional terms.

Subject: Alcohol / Subject (tone): relief
A smile creeps on my face as I pour a thin liquid from my wine bottle, the one I've been keeping in the kitchen for ages. I had suffered from the long awaiting taste of alcohol to drop on the tip of my tongue. I promised myself I'd sober up to do my job routinely. People always told me growing up that those who drink are broken-minded folk. They used it to escape the harsh reality that is life... But lately, being a surgeon hasn't been what it's all cracked up to be. Telling families I was the reason their child died, waiting to see if I missed part of a patient's tumor, or doing an operation just to hear that the doctors were mistaken—Not anymore. I can finally say goodbye to the stress and blood pours and kiss the sweet dream of relief. The second this beauty touches my lips, it'll all be over. I'll be free.
