Today's Task: Put yourself in somebody else's shoes. Compose a poem that embodies the perspective of an underrepresented community you haven't previously explored in your writing.

I stand before you
As the beginning brother
Inhabitant of America
But seen as another

We made our mark
Through Tupees and maize
But that wasn't good enough
—Just slaves to your gaze

You sealed our mouths
Set sail to cross paths
Forced our people to sea
Carving a blood bath

Our youth was misguided,
Forced under your culture
A culture that thrives
On our people's color

Presents turned into poison
Trees turned into ash
You took my home away
I hate your culture for that

You don't know my words
You don't know my anger
You don't know our kids
You don't know our sisters

We are your history
We are your legacy
We are the reason
You can roam your land free

You think my people are a joke
You think we can be controlled
But keep one eye open
Let's see whose story gets told

I stand before you
As the beginning brother
Inhabitant of America
But seen as another
