I roll over in bed, reaching for Calithea, only to be met with air. I groan and place my hand down on her side, her spot is cold which tells me she hasn't been in bed for awhile.
I peel open my eyes and glance at the clock to see the bright red numbers that read 4:27 shining at me.
"What the hell." I mumble, rolling to the edge of the bed and swinging my legs over. I crack my neck and back, stretching as I stand up. I shiver as I walk across my room, the breeze of the fan hitting my bare chest.
My bathroom light is off so I know she's not in there, but I think I have an idea of where she might be. My suspicions are correct when I crack open Asterias door to see the lights on and Calithea holding the crying little girl.
I shut the door quietly and walk over to the two girls. Calithea looks at me, her eyes tired and red. I wrap my arms around the duo, not saying anything, the only noise filling the room are the loud sobs coming from Asteria.
I take a look around the room to see Asterias princess comforter on the other side of the room and her sheets are shoved in the corner.
It takes 20 more minutes for Asteria to calm down, and when she pulls her head out of her mothers neck, she finally realizes I am there.
Once she sees me she is quick to climb from Calitheas lap right into mine. She wraps her arms tightly around my neck and her legs around my waist. I smile and wrap my arms around her small body.
"Hi." She whispers, her voice hoarse from all the crying.
"Hi, la mia stellata." I brush her frizzy curls away from her face and gently kiss her temple. I look at Calithea to see her staring at the two of us, complete admiration in her eyes. "What has made you so upset, krolik?"
"Tight and scratchy." She mumbles.
I look at Calithea to see what she means but she just shrugs her shoulders, telling me that she knows just as much as I do.
"What do you mean by that?" I try to pull her away so I can see her face better, but she refuses and clings harder to me.
"My sheets are scratchy, when I tried to get them off I got stuck."
"Stuck where?"
"Stuck in my sheets."
I think for a moment at her words, "so when the sheets started to make you uncomfortable because they were scratchy and you tried to kick them off did you get wrapped up in the sheets?"
She nods at my words, "yeah." She sniffles and pouts.
Calithea gets up off the floor, a confused look on her face, "your sheets have never been scratchy before." I hear her mumble. She picks up the sheets that Asteria shoved in the corner of her room and runs her hand over them.
"Are they rough feeling?" I question.
"Yeah, there is pilling on the fabric." She sighs, "it must have happened when I washed them yesterday."
