"Mam, take the pen please. You have to sign the death certificate, mam? Are you listening? Ms. Jones, can you hear me?"
Have you ever been in a room so quiet, you could hear your own heart beat? Feeling every knock that ripples in your chest. Hearing your own voice in your head?
Boom Boom, Boom Boom, Boom Boom
The rhythm to the drum in my heart was slowly but surely dying out; and the body that lied behind those double doors, their heart beat was completely gone. No more blood rushing through the veins, no more breaths to take. Nothing, just a life less body that use to be somebody.
Placing the pen in my hand, it immediately fell. I had no strength to bend down or pick it up.
"How can I sign anything if I haven't seen the body?" The tears were running a marathon down my face. My face was flushed, the life had truly been sucked out of me. I was in and out of reality. Zoning in for a few seconds then out for another ten seconds.
"Because the body is in unrecognizable mam, it's burnt beyond recognition, the only thing the person had on them was this necklace"
The nurse held up the Safire blue amulet necklace I had given to Liam a few days prior.
"No !! No !! It's not him, let me see him !! Let me see him!! I have to see him!"
Narrator:
Jumping up and down, pushing her way through the doctors, fighting with the little bit of strength she had left. Pushing the double doors apart where the body in a black zipped up bag rested on a table.
"Mam, please we cannot let you view the body, it was burnt beyond recognition" The doctor repeated, trying to save Jess the heartache and nightmares of a burnt up human being. Skin being completely fried away, no eyeballs, only teeth and bone structure.
"I will identify my dead nephew !! It's my right as his family ! Open the bloody fucking bag or I will sue this entire hospital for every cent" she yelled at the doctor, spit flying from her mouth.
Her senses were heightened, she was in defensive mother mode. No matter how badly the body was, she still had a right to confirm whether or not the body underneath the bag was indeed Liam's.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Narrator:
Jess woke up half an hour earlier to make breakfast for the house. It's been two weeks into her vacation started and she was loving every moment of it. Although she had occasional mood swings here and there and craved the weirdest foods, she was getting back to her old self. Speaking to Chelsea on the phone and her daughter helped a lot as well. Chelsea even gave her the 'okay' to call Jess auntie.
She's been staying connected to those who brought her happiness, laughter and zero stress. Her skin was glowing, the bags under her eyes were gone, and she's been consulting with a relator about property to build her home.
Walking into the kitchen, she placed on a floral print apron, got some flour out of the cupboard, along with a few dry ingredients. Two rotten bananas, milk, cinnamon, eggs, baking powder and vanilla extract.
She mixed them together to make some banana pancakes from scratch, the old fashioned way. Along with some bacon in the air fryer with sunny side up eggs.
One stove burner had hot oatmeal, while the other had cheesy grits bubbling. She lit three scented vanilla candles. Opening two windows to let the fresh air in.
