I saunter along the street. People parting like the red sea for me. I hear their terrified whispers.
"Oh my God, it's her." I hear a man in a nice business suit whisper to a woman with a stroller who I'm assuming is his wife. "Should we call the police?".
Just as the woman's about to reply they notice me looking at them. I smile and compliment on the man's suit by saying "Nice suit". But they don't reply, they just glance at each other in horror before running away.
I unsuccessfully stifle a smile as I continue to watch those 2 run away. More people parting ways for me. I ignore all of them and finally reach the sliding doors of Hatterson Bank.
I step inside and the same thing that happened on the street happens inside the bank.
People either run away or part like the red sea. And I do the same thing every time that happens and just ignore them. My eyes are, instead, focused on the front desk where I can just make out a woman hiding under her table and cowering in fear. When I finally get to her, she looks like she's seen a ghost.
"Hey," I start, "won't take up too much of your time, ma'am, considering I'm robbing this place and all but I heard about that new vault that now holds, like, 30% of the bank's gold." I smile and innocent smile. "Do you happen to know where it is?"
It takes about 5 seconds to regain her composure. She slowly stands up and I notice that her left hand is shaking, but quickly covers it up with her right. "Uh, um, i-it's over there." She points to the right side of the building down a corridor. "Go down that corridor and make a left. It's the 3rd door down." She slips some keys onto the desk and I take them. I thank her and go about my way.
Around 3 minutes later I stop right outside the vault doors. If you look closely it's slightly bigger than the rest of the vaults and there's a chain on it.
"Man, this is what was called high level security? A dang chain attached to a door?" I mutter. "This is what the news was going on and on about for the past 2 weeks?"
I snap my fingers and the chain breaks. My abilities of telekinesis, atmokinesis (control of elements) and teleportation are one of the only things that I'm genuinely grateful for. You never know when superpowers might come in handy someday.
I know it's been handy for all the time I've been on my own.
I'm just about to snap my finger to bust the door when suddenly another door busts open and some way too familiar faces are seen.
I turn around only to the only other person who looks exactly like me standing only a few meters from me. God, I wish she would just get lost for a minute. I'm talking about Hayleigh Covey.
My goody-2-shoes twin sister.
Along with half of the police force.
I give her a dirty look and say in a highly sarcastic voice, "Oh it's you again. What? Here to put on a big hero act again to make the Covey family name keep its reputation?"
" Step away from the vault, Maddie." She gives me an uncharacteristically hard stare and I wonder for just a second whether she's actually going to arrest me or not. "Step away and we won't have any problems."
It's an act for sure, I can already see it in her eyes, that she's a little reluctant to do this. So I do what siblings do best with each other.
I mess with her just for the fun of it.
"Make me." I imitate her hard stare and We're staring at each other as if our lives depended on it. I can't help but feel a little stupid.
Her eyes instantly soften. She's being so unpredictable. "I'm not gonna make you step away from a vault, Maddie. Just step away from it."
