"So," I say, trying to lighten the mood. "sick party, huh?" When no one responds I just mutter "tough crowd" under my breath. "I saved her by the way." I add quickly and point to Alina. And not 59 pairs of eyes have turned to Alina.
"It's true," She mutters, "she saved me."
And I only say 59 pairs of eyes because the last person which the 60th pair of eyes belong to is making their way towards us right now.
"Alina!" Hayleigh says and hugs Alina so tight I'm surprised Alina's back hasn't snapped in two yet. "Thank goodness you're ok." She turns to me and pats me on the shoulder. I've never been a hugger and she knows this better than anyone "Thank you." she mouths and I nod my head in response.
I've been thinking about why I actually ran away after she scratched me a lot more than I should.
"So." Hayleigh says to me awkwardly. "You came."
"Yeah." I respond in the same tone. "I came." A pause. "Well, I guess I'll be getting out of your hair now I mean, like, not that your hair is bad, Hayleigh. In fact, your hair's great! Which means my hair is great too 'cause, y'know, we're twins." Shut up, Alex. "You. Me. You. Me. Family resemblance? Ya see it?"
Hayleigh looks at me like I'm mad, and I don't blame her. "Uh, yeah. I see it. And anyway what are we all doing standing here and chatting? Let's party!"
As if on cue everyone shuffles back inside and dance music starts playing. Well, everyone except me at least. I lean against the doorframe.
"Aren't you going in?" Alina asks and gently tugs on my hand.
I shake my head and nod at Hayleigh, who's standing not 10 steps away. Alina runs to her immediately and gives her a big hug. And at the moment, I feel like there's no more point being at that party anymore. I mean, when Alina was telling me about her crowd anxiety I actually felt at that moment that I had to have a 'big sister' moment and would walk in with her. For that moment and that moment alone, from the way she was so open to talk to me about her fears and the way she looked so helpless and alone when she genuinely thought that I wasn't about to go in with her. I thought she wanted me. But I was the one who ran away all those years ago. And the way she hugged Hayleigh just now proves my point exactly.
If she didn't want me to walk through those doors with her, that's my fault.
And I don't plan on caring any longer.
"Hey listen guys I'm gon' leave so all y'all have a good time!" I say as fast as I can but just as I'm about to snap my fingers a hand grabs me. I look at the arm it belongs to and see Hayleigh raising an eyebrow and smirking at me.
"Aw, no you don't." She says. "You are staying."
I look at her in surprise. "No Hayleigh really you don't have to I-"
Suddenly, there's a loud clunk and something drops onto the floor from my dungaree pocket. And for the second time in 45 minutes, I've made the whole room go silent again. And they're all staring in horror at what dropped out of my pocket, including me.
Jewels.
But not just any jewels.
Jewels from the vault which I attempted to rob at Hatterson Bank 2 days ago.
Oh. My. God. I know this chapter was quite fast paced but the drama is on. What do you guys think is going to happen to Alex next?
I also just want to make it clear that I'm considering doing a single and double upload pattern when uploading chapters of this book. Lmk what you guys think of this as I've already written quite a bit of this book on a google doc prior to publishing it on Wattpad and I'm so excited with having people read it.
