The whole family looks at the door.
"Ms. Thompson." Abuela says surprised. "W-Welcome."
"A 'welcome'? That's it? I was really expecting more than that, Esmeralda. Especially because I've been waiting so long to see your new member of the family." She looks at me when she says the last part and the only thing I can do is fake smile and try not to roll my eyes.
"Madeleine." She says to me, "Has it been 2 years already? You've certainly changed."
"Funny, I was gonna say the same thing to you. You've changed too. Physically."
She looks skeptical. "And what's that supposed to mean?"
I shrug my shoulders. "Well, you kinda look like I haven't seen you in 20 years instead of 2."
"Why you little-"
"What? I thought honesty's the best policy." I suddenly smirk. "You didn't I'd lie did you? Honestly, Jasmine, I thought you knew I was better than that."
She suddenly fake smiles but is trying her best to make it look genuine. "Don't. Call. Me. Jasmine."
I roll my eyes. "Whatever."
