•Misophonia is a disorder that causes extreme irritability, anxiety, and other emotional responses towards certain sounds. It's a sensory sensitivity disorder, and there are many others.
•Misophonia is definitely one disorder that I don't hear a lot of people talking about, but I know that it's more common than you would think.
•It has not yet been accepted as a part of its own role in psychiatric or neurological classification, but people have been working hard to get it out of the umbrella of OCD, and into its own department. Therefore, because it is out of range, it is usually picked up quickly and is self-diagnosable.
SYMPTOMS:
Symptoms of Misophonia include irritability, rage, and/or anxiety towards trigger sounds which are usually very common noises like chewing or breathing.
TREATMENT:
Treatment of Misophonia consists of therapy and lifestyle recommendations including but not limited to sound protection, noise cancelling headphones, or setting up a safe, noise-free space when faced with trigger sounds. If left untreated it can lead to social isolation, panic, anger, etc.
