They still stood, hands entwined, Sara looking deep into his eyes, not wanting to speak, move, even think, afraid something will ruin the moment.
She finally spoke, but it came out in a choked whisper. "Thank you." She shyly moved as close as she could possibly get to him, and placed her lips on his, wrapping her arms around his neck. It was a brief kiss, and not very intense, but that was how she wanted it. It felt good.
She suddenly became self-conscious and pulled away. Javier sensed this.
"What?" he asked.
Sara smiled and laughed a little. "I'm afraid I'm probably not a very good kisser."
Javier grinned. "Do you honestly think I care about that? I'm in love with you. Everything about you. I don't care what you think is good. Just having you is good enough for me." He leaned in and they kissed harder this time, moving to the couch and basically falling onto it because they couldn't let go of each other. When they pulled away for a moment, Sara said,
"God, I was so scared you wouldn't forgive me."
"Baby girl," Javier said, making Sara think she would die any second now, "None of this was you. None."
"Okay... well it wasn't you," Sara said.
"Okay. So maybe it wasn't anyone's fault. Maybe sometimes nightmares don't have a cause." Sara pulled him near, breathing in the smell of his cheap cologne, thinking maybe he was right, maybe sometimes shit just happened without it being anyone's fault. And honestly, who wouldn't prefer that?
The next day, Sara woke to the sound of plates clinking together and the oven beeping. Her heart immediately sank. But then her mind cleared and she realized where she was, and flashbacks from last night came flooding in. She smiled and recalled the way they had gently swayed as they kissed, their bodies in perfect harmony, and the taste of his lips as they met her own. She rolled over and expected to see Javier's sleeping body next to her, but instead she saw an empty space in the bed. She was confused for a moment, but then connected his absence with the sounds being made in the kitchen. She sat up, sunlight streaming in through the windows, a cool breeze making Javier's shirt she was wearing fly up a little. She walked to the kitchen, smelling pancakes and fruit.
"Morning, sunshine," Javier said as she walked into the kitchen. She gave him a kiss on the cheek.
"I'm so tired," she said.
"Go back to sleep."
"Nah, I'm up and ready to annoy you." Javier smiled.
"You're the least annoying thing I can think of right now." Sara smiled and said,
"Are you making breakfast?" Javier rolled his eyes playfully.
"Nope, Sara, I'm not. I decided we're gonna have pancakes for dinner at 9 in the morning."
"I could've made breakfast," Sara said. "You didn't have to do it. How long have you been up?"
"About an hour," Javier answered.
"Why?!"
"Because I wanted to make you breakfast. Isn't it simple enough?" Javier asked, putting her plate down on the table. "You deserve it."
Sara looked at him like he had three heads. "Me? Out of all people right now, I think I am the least deserving of anything."
"Quit saying that!" Javier said. "I thought we went over this last night. It wasn't your fault, babe. Let it go."
