"Because most of the students have left, I can now give you my full, undivided attention." Banthikaar said to West. He nervously smiled, knowing if the Headmaster's attention was a good thing or bad thing. It was likely Banthikaar was going to work him to the bone to bring him up to speed.
"What about Saiyah?" West asked. The girl flinched at the mention of her name. "Aren't you going to help her unlock her powers too?"
Banthikaar and Saiyah shared a look. He knew that she hid her powers from the others. "I train her individually, we had just ended our session half an hour ago." A convincing lie.
As the rest of the group entered the classroom, Banthikaar had them all sit at desks. "You all know how magic works and what it can provide. We have you put your magic in a form, do you know why that is? What we don't teach at the academy is the science behind the magic bestowed upon us."
It felt like classes were back in session, minus the empty desks behind them. Saiyah listened carefully, jotting notes in her mind as the Headmaster spoke. He pointed to the chalkboard behind him.
"There are three main Variants in magic." He pointed to a flowy, curled symbol drawn on the board. Saiyah recognized the symbol. Skip had taught her a bit about the Variants before she'd started the academy. The reminder of her old mentor left a pit in her stomach. "The first is Azulchemy. Azulchemy is the manipulation of elements, the material things around us. For example, Mr. Tsudan and Mr. Zadro are Azulchemists; they can control the elements around them to do their bidding."
"Aren't I one too?" West asked, raising a confused brow.
Banthikaar shook his head, pointing at a bubbly symbol beside the first. "Not entirely. You see, the second Variant is Genochemy. It is power that comes from within. Like Coach Tyson, he enhanced his physical speed. Genochemy only strengthens traits and features that one already has. But you, Mr. Burns, do a mix between manipulation and enhancement. You draw in electricity within yourself and manipulate it and use it as a laser. It is not an element that surrounds you, but something you already had."
West opened and closed his mouth a few times. "I think I understand."
"Miss Varga is a Genochemist as well. She gathers strength from within herself and channels it into her hammer, creating a devastating attack."
"And the third?" Asked Zadro, intrigued as well.
Banthikaar's gaze briefly at Saiyah, though no one else seemed to notice. Saiyah already knew what the third was. He looked to the last symbol, it was drawn with sharp and jagged lines. "The third is the opposite of Azulchemy, it is called Zurochemy. It is the manipulation of the immaterial, things that cannot be seen by the naked eye. There is a variation of Zurochemy, known as Chronochemy. Chronochemists can manipulate time; it is a thing that is immaterial, but something that can be controlled. Understand?"
"What's the point of knowing this?" Vex rolled his eyes, staring boredly at his fingernails. The Headmaster merely frowned at him.
"Because the Legends can do all three Variants." Saiyah gaped, this was not something she learned. Why did Skip leave something like that out? Even Vex sat up in his seat, suddenly interested. "As an example, take the Green Wizard. He has managed to stay alive all of these centuries because he can do Zurochemy. He can regenerate limbs because he can do Genochemy. And he can manipulate elements around him; Azulchemy."
Saiyah stared at the Headmaster in shock. He can regenerate, be super fast and strong, thus Genochemy. He can control elements, that's Azulchemy....I remember him slashing me with gold, was that light? That would be Zurochemy as well... She began to connect the dots.
When the group was dismissed for lunch, Saiyah walked up to Banthikaar's desk. "You're a Legend as well, aren't you?" She was shaking, curling her hands into fists with either surprise or anger, she didn't know which.
"You're His brother."
