Chapter 2
Later, they went to see West's progress. But knowing him, there probably wasn't any. West Burns was Romelle and Saiyah's only other friend. He had a thing for Romelle, but she was too oblivious to know it. But Saiyah was weary of him because he was an 18 year old who was held back. Whatever happened that made him stay back a year was kept confidential. Although he seemed like an overall decent guy who was quite the comedian.
They found him standing in the corner, making strange noises as if he was constipated. When he spotted them, he waved them over. "I'm trying to shoot lasers from my fingers." He announced, beads of perspiration dotted his temple. West was tall, taller than Vex who was exactly six-foot. But not as tall as Skip, Saiyah thought grimly. The mention of the man's name was like a slap in the face. Her only family figure had left her, and she allowed it to happen.
Psychotic demon or not, they were still family.
"How's it going so far?" Romelle asked with her arms crossed, although she already knew the answer. West just gave her a grin. He had an....interesting appearance. He had bright yellow hair mixed with strands of electric blue. One eye was blue with a yellow pupil, and the other was vice versa; yellow with a blue pupil. He also had bandages along his shoulders, arms, wrists, and face. A scar marked his bottom lip. His unsettling appearance often frightened many, but Saiyah and Romelle accepted him as one of their own. That is why Saiyah hated to see him struggle with calling upon his magic and get made fun of because of it.
Many thought he was a weak magiker, but the girls saw his potential.
Saiyah kicked the back of his knee, although it didn't move at the gesture. "Not so flat on your feet." She commanded. "If you stay light on your feet it would be much easier. And don't tense your muscles, otherwise it would be difficult for the magic to flow throughout your body."
"Yes, ma'am." West saluted her with two fingers and followed her instructions. It was one of the first lessons her demon mentor had taught her.
"Picture the power flowing in your veins, reaching your fingertips. Are you imagining the lasers?"
With eyes shut tightly closed, West nodded. "I see it."
"Take a deep breath through the nose and try."
After a few suspenseful heartbeats, a miniscule spark erupted from his index finger. West whooped, "I did it! I did it on command!"
"You got this, West!" Romelle cheered. "You just need to practice more under the tutelage of Saiyah."
The man turned to Saiyah and bowed deeply. "Thank you, sensei."
"Please don't call me that." Saiyah sighed, struggling to keep her mask of indifference. West responded by patting her gently on the head.
"Wow, impressive," goaded a student nearby. "The weakling has to ask the magicless little girl for help." West exchanged glances with Saiyah, as if silently asking for permission. When she shrugged, he grinned mischievously. He pointed his index finger at the rude classmate, took in a sharp breath and shot a brief beam of light out of his finger. The person received the spark in the arm with a yowl.
"It's a small start," West tucked his hands into his short's pockets. "But it's pretty painful."
"Nice work, my pupil." Saiyah radiated with pride at her friend's progress. She patted him on the shoulder, carefully going around the bandage. She never did question why he had so many of them. They never questioned why she didn't even try to use her magic.

"We're running out of time." Professor Malin grunted, a crease forming between his thin gray brows.
"Which is why we need to take a step ahead!" Professor Meyer agreed.
"What do you suggest?" Headmaster Raiko inquired, clasping his damp hands behind his back as he circled the table of professors.
"We eliminate the obvious ones." Replied Professor Meyer.
Raiko shook his head, which now began to throb. "That is too rash of a decision. The students and their families would further question our intentions."
"It's worth the risk!" Professor Seddik slammed his fist onto the mahogany table, losing all composure. "If it means protecting the world from him, then we must do it." A shiver went down Raiko's spine at the mention of him.
"Very well," Raiko sighed. As much as he didn't wish to, they had to accelerate with their plans. "Eliminate those in the upper classes that aren't showing potential is satisfactory. Only 5 shall remain...."
