A new life for Sofia

Chapter one

Carina just finished a long day at the hospital. She was exhausted and her head was pounding. All she wanted to do was go to bed.

She got into her car. The drive from the hospital was only 15 minutes, but if felt like an eternity. She felt like she had to wait for every traffic light on the way.

''Maledetto semafori.'' Carina cursed while she waited for another traffic light. It was currently 9:30 PM, and all she wanted to do was hold her wife and go to bed.

After what felt like forever, she saw Maya's car in the driveway. The thought of Maya being home made her feel relieved. Maya had always been her rock, but the last few months have been difficult for the two. Although it had only made their relationship stronger.

The couple had decided that they wanted to go through IVF. So far, they had three failed attempts. It had been an emotional time for the two women. After the last failed attempt, they decided to wait a couple of months until they were ready to try again. The last failed attempt was six months ago.

She opened the door. Maya was sitting in the living room, watching a football match.

''Hey babe, how was work?'' Maya looked up to see Carina.

''It was very busy today. I delivered six bambini and performed two c-sections.'' She sat down on the couch next to Maya.

''Wow, how are you feeling?''

''I'm very tired. I'm going to take a quick shower and then go to bed.'' She gave Maya a quick kiss and walked to the bathroom.

Maya and Carina bought a new house almost a year ago, because they didn't want to raise their children in an apartment.

Carina felt a little nauseous. It had been ten days since this embryo was implanted.

She got into the shower and couldn't help but think that maybe the nauseousness, the fatigue and the headache were early pregnancy symptoms.

She didn't have the energy to wash her hair. After a quick shower, she was ready to go to bed.

Maya headed upstairs as well.

''Bambina, I have been feeling a little off today. I think I might be pregnant.''

Maya looked at Carina with big eyes. ''Babe are you serious! I mean I don't like that you aren't feeling very good, but the possibility of you being pregnant is amazing!'' Maya gave Carina a big hug.

''I know! I didn't have any symptoms the last three times. I feel very hopeful.''

They got into bed together.

Carina could tell her wife was in deep thoughts. After a few minutes Maya spoke up:

''Carina, I don't want to get my hopes up. The last three times were so difficult.'' Maya looked at her wife with a sad look on her face.

''I know tesoro. It is recommended to take a pregnancy test 14 days after implantation. How about we take the test together Wednesday, before you go to work?'' Carina held Maya close. They were looking each other in the eyes.

''I think I would like that.''

''Regardless of what the test says, we still have to go to the clinic a day after for a blood test.''

''I know babe, this whole process just makes me a little anxious'' Maya sighs.

''I'm anxious as well tesoro. It is normal to feel like that after what we have been through. How about we cuddle right now and go to sleep. We can talk about it in the morning?''

''I'll never say no to cuddles'' Maya laughs.

There was a short period of silence. Carina and Maya were holding each other, happy to be in each other's embrace.

''Have I ever told you how much I love you?'' Maya asked with a grin on her face.

Carina smiled at Maya. ''I think you might have mentioned it once or twice.''

''I love you so much Carina'' Maya whispers in Carina's ear.

''Ti amo così tanto bambina. Dammi un bacio.'' Maya did what she was asked.

That night, Maya did not sleep well. She was up all-night thinking about what her life would be like if they were really pregnant.

She got up early that morning to make them both breakfast. Maya made herself a green smoothie, and she made bacon and eggs for her wife. I had taken her some time, but after living together with Carina for almost five years, she was now able to make her wife a decent espresso. Maya drank her smoothie and walked upstairs to bring Carina breakfast in bed.

Carina was still in a deep sleep.

''Goodmorning beautiful, I made you some breakfast'' Maya shook her wife awake.

''Buongiorno bambina'' They had a little good morning kiss. ''Grazie per la colazione.''

''Not a problem babe. Are you feeling better than last night?''

''My head still hurts a little, but I don't feel exhausted anymore. I'm glad I only work half a day today.''

''That's good car. I might stop by to say hello. What time do you start?''

''I have to be there at twelve. How about you?''

'' I work a twelve-hour shift today, so I will be home at nine.''

They sat in silence for a few minutes while Carina ate her breakfast.

''I'm going beautiful. If it's a slow day I will stop by the hospital.'' She kisses her wife.

''Alright tesoro, please be safe.''
