A new life for Sofia

Chapter twenty-five

Maya couldn't sleep. She has always had trouble sleeping, but this time, it had a reason. She was excited and nervous. Tomorrow, the DeLuca-Bishops will find out the gender of their twin babies. While the gender didn't matter to Maya, she was still eager to see if both of the babies are healthy and doing well.

Careful not to wake up her wife, she walked out of their bedroom. To her surprise, when she entered the living room, she saw her daughter sitting on the couch staring in front of her absentmindedly.

''Sofia? Are you ok?'' She asked from a little distance.

No responds, so Maya came closer.

''Hey bubs?''

Still nothing, so Maya stood in front of her. Only then, Sofia snapped out of her state.

''Oh, hi mom.''

Maya took a seat next to her daughter on the couch. ''What are you doing here in the middle of the night?'' She asked, a little bit concerned.

Sofia shrugged. ''I woke up and I couldn't sleep anymore.''

''Look at me Sofia.'' Maya gently said. She knew that if something was wrong, Sofia would avoid eye contact when she answered Maya's next question.

''Is there something bothering you, bubs?''

''I don't think so. My head was just full.'' Sofia replied. She kept looking at Maya, so Maya knew it was an honest answer.

Maya took her daughter's hands. ''Ok, but if there is something you want to talk about, just know that me or your mama will always be there for you. Understood?'' Maya asked.

''I will, mom.''

''So why are you here?'' Sofia wondered after they had sat in silence together for five minutes.

''I'm a bit nervous about the whole twins thing.'' Maya sighed.

Sofia nodded. ''Would you like to talk about it, or should we watch cartoons?'' She replied and Maya laughed.

''Grab the remote, bubs. But turn the volume down so your mama doesn't wake up. Ooh, and don't tell her that I didn't send you straight to bed if she asks.'' Maya spoke and went into the kitchen to grab a glass of water for both of them.

The two of them were comfortably snuggling under a blanket while watching SpongeBob. It used to be Sofia's comfort program. Maya had never watched it before, but it was a welcome distraction.

After two episodes, Sofia's eyes began to close. When Maya was sure she was actually asleep, she carried her daughter upstairs and laid her back in bed. After that, she joined Carina again. She kept thinking about their babies, as the soft snores of the Italian slowly lulled her to sleep.

Queen of the clipboard was in full action mode the next morning. According to Maya, the family was late on schedule. Sofia wasn't even awake yet, and they were supposed to drop her off at Andy's house in less than an hour.

It was 8AM when Maya decided to wake up Sofia.

''Hey Soof, you have to wake up. We got to go in less than forty-five minutes.'' Maya shook her.

Sofia's eyes fluttered open. ''Come on Soof, get up please.'' Maya urged.

Sofia said nothing as she slowly got out of bed and into the bathroom. Meanwhile downstairs, Carina was trying to calm her wife down.

''Bambina, stop for a moment.'' Carina grabbed both of her wife's arms. Maya was trying to do ten things at a time.

''Take a deep breath with me.'' Carina instructed. She showed her wife, and Maya copied her.
