A new life for Sofia

Chapter four

The sound of the sirens fills the air as the aid car arrives at Grey-Sloan.

''Sofia, eleven-years-old, she has a head lack and complains of chest pains. GCS is 15 and her bp is stable.'' Maya is obviously in captain Bishop mode.

''Ok let's get her into trauma one please.'' Arizona Robbins takes the lead on the case.

They bring Sofia into trauma one and start examining her. Maya hasn't left her side. She is constantly trying to keep the girl as calm as possible.

''I'm here, what have we got?'' Doctor Shepherd walks into the room.

''She sustained a head injury in a car accident.'' Robbins answers.

Doctor Shepherd starts checking her for signs of head trauma.

''Sofia, can you please follow this light?'' Sofia does.

''Thank you, you're doing great Sofia.'' Amelia tells her.

''Can you please answer some questions for me.''

Sofia tries to look at Maya. Maya gives her a comforting smile.

''Ok Sofia do you remember what happened?''

Sofia's eyes start to tear up again.

''We were driving to my brother's football match, when a truck hit us. But I'm super sure our light was green.''

''Do you remember what happened after that?'' Doctor Shepherd gives the girl space to tell her story.

''There was a loud bang, and I asked my mom to respond and and she didn't.'' She is full on crying at this point. Doctor Shepherd decides that she won't continue with the questions.

''Her eyes have a delayed reaction to the light, I'm sure she has a concussion, but i want to rule out something more serious. I want a head CT and an MRI.'' Doctor Shepherd tells Adams, the intern on this case.

''Also Adams, order an x-ray for her chest, I think she has some broken ribs.'' Robbins orders.

''You have been very brave for me Sofia, thank you, I will see you soon.'' Doctor Shepherd says goodbye and leaves the room.

Doctor Adams grabs his supplies to stitch up the big head wound.

Meanwhile Maya is trying to comfort Sofia, who is very upset.

''It's ok baby girl, you can let it all out.''

Adams does a great job.

''Good job Sofia, you have 17 stitches. You should come back to the hospital a week from now. Someone will take them out for you.'' Adams explains and leaves the room.

Maya and Sofia sit in a comfortable silence for a while.

Carina came to the trauma room, expecting her wife to be in the waiting room. But when she arrived, Maya was right next to Sofia, holding her hand and stroking her arm. Carina took a second to admire the view. She had never seen her wife like this. Usually, when there was a child involved in the call, Maya ordered someone else to go with the kid. Carina wondered why Maya chose to go with Sofia this time.

Doctor Robbins left the room, saying that she would be back in a few minutes to take Sofia up for her scans.

Carina entered the room.

''Hi, my name is Carina, are you Sofia?''

Sofia nodded.

''It's very nice to meet you Sofia, is the captain being nice to you?'' Carina gives both girls a welcoming smile.

''Yeah, she is really nice.''

''I'm glad she is bambina.'' She now turns to Maya. ''Did you leave the station to come with Sofia? Who is in charge now?'' She asks her wife.

''I wanted to come to the hospital with her so I could comfort her. I left Travis in charge.'' Maya tells Carina without taking her eyes of Sofia.

Then, Sofia speaks up.

''Carina, you are a doctor right, at this hospital?'' Carina nods. ''Yes I am piccola.''

''Do you know if my brother is ok? His name is Tomas Spada.''

''I do not know, but I will try to find out. Are you Italian by any chance? Tomas Spada sounds Italian to me.'' Carina asks the girl, recognizing the Italian name.

''My dad was half Italian, and my mom was American, but I was born and raised in the Netherlands.''

''Parli Italiano Piccolina?'' Carina asks.

''Non parlo molto bene, ma posso capirlo.'' She tells Carina.

''Va bene, I'm going to see if there is an update on your brother. It was very nice to meet you, bambina. I'm sure I'll see you soon.''

Carina leaves the room to look for an update. She goes to the desk to ask if they have any information on Tomas. In the meantime, Maya and Sofia keep talking.

''I have a question, Sofia. You said your dad was half Italian. Is he not here anymore?''

''He died because of cancer when I was eight. I still miss him every day.'' fresh tears fill her eyes again.

''I'm so sorry honey.'' Maya's heart breaks for the little girl. It seems like she has no one left.

Doctor Robbins comes in the room. ''I'm here to take you for your head CT Sofia.''

''Is Maya allowed to come with me?'' She looks at Maya, trying to see if Maya even wants to come with her.

''Yes, she can Sofia.'' Robbins says.

''Will you please come with me Maya?'' Sofia asks.

''I'll be right by your side the whole time Sofia; you don't have to worry about that.''

In the meanwhile, Carina got some more information on Tomas. His heart could not be resuscitated. He died half an hour ago.

Carina wanted to speak to Maya first. She could not tell Sofia that her brother died, without Maya being aware. She waited until Sofia was settled into a room to talk to Maya. She entered the room, trying to hide the emotion on her face.

''Hey Sofia, how was the scan, do you have your results yet? Carina asks.

''The scan was a little scary, but Maya really helped calm me down. The doctor should be here with the results within an hour.'' Sofia explains.

''That's good piccolina.''

Meanwhile Maya was able to tell something was going on by the look on Carina's face.

Carina has another question for Sofia. ''Sofia, is it ok if Maya and I go outside for a little while, we will be right outside her room, but I have to ask her something.''

''Okay, but please don't take too long.''

''It will only take a couple of minutes bambina.''

Maya got up and followed Carina out of the room. She closed the door.

''Is everything ok? Are you feeling off again? Or do you have news on Tomas?'' Maya is quickly asking these questions. She has angst in her voice.

''I'm okay bambina, but I do have news on Tomas. Unfortunately, Tomas didn't make it.''
