A new life for Sofia

Chapter ten

The family is having breakfast together. It's currently 8:30. Vic and Travis will be at the house in about 15 minutes.

''Are you sure you're ok with this, bubs?'' Maya asks Sofia, who hasn't said a lot this morning.

Sofia doesn't seem to listen

Maya waves her hand in front of Sofia's eyes. ''Bubs, are you alright?''

Sofia looks over at Maya. ''Sorry, yeah, just a bit nervous.''

Carina takes Sofia's hands. ''Non preoccuparti piccolina. Vic è molto gentile.'' She reassures the eleven-year-old.

Sofia nods and continues eating her breakfast.

The doorbell rings.

''Can you please get the door, bubs?'' Maya calls.

Sofia opens the door. Vic and Travis are standing in front of her. Sofia looks at them with big eyes.

Vic introduces herself to the young girl. ''Hi Sofia, do you remember us? My name is Vic, and this is Travis. Can we come in?''

Sofia nods. The three of them walk to the living room.

''Hey guys, thanks for coming. I will be back in a little over an hour.'' Maya says, while putting on her shoes and looking for her keys.

''No problem, Maya. We would love to get to know the newest probie.'' Vic smiles.

Carina and Maya get ready to leave. ''Be good for Vic and Travis, bubs. Carina has to work today, but I will be back in a little while, ok? She gives Sofia a quick kiss on her forehead. ''Ciao bambina.'' Carina does the same. They close the door behind them.

Vic and Travis sit on the couch. ''What would you like to do, Sofia?'' Vic asks.

Sofia shrugs, fidgeting with her hands. She's clearly a bit nervous.

''How about we play a board game? Do you like Monopoly?'' Travis suggests.

Sofia agrees. The three of them begin a game of Monopoly.

Meanwhile, Carina and Maya had arrived at the clinic. It was only a ten-minute drive. They walk through the doors of the clinic. Everything still looks the same as all the times they had been her before. Both of them are feeling nervous.

Luckily, it doesn't take long until their doctor arrives.

''Carina DeLuca-Bishop?'' Doctor Collins calls out. She has been their doctor from the beginning.

Maya and Carina both shake her hand. They take a seat in her office.

''So, how have you been these past two weeks?'' She turns towards Carina.

Carina's leg is bouncing up and down. ''We actually took in an eleven-year-old girl 2 days ago. Maya met her on a call. Other than that, I've had some headaches and a bit of nausea in the mornings.''

Doctor Collins was typing away on her laptop. ''Wow, that must be a big change. How are you guys adjusting?''

Carina looks over at Maya and grabs her hand. ''It's been amazing actually. Sofia is really the best kid I have ever seen.'' Carina said with a proud smile on her face.

''That's great. So today, we are going to take a blood chest to check your hCG levels. We are aiming for a number at least above 200, but you guys already know that.''

The blood test is quick, and the DeLuca-Bishops were allowed to leave the clinic after half an hour. They would get an email with the results later that day.

''I'll drive with you to work babe. I want to run back. Sofia's probably doing ok with Vic and Trav.'' Maya says.

They arrive at the hospital ten minutes later and kiss each other goodbye.

''Ciao bambina, tonight we'll open the results together, sì? They both make their way out of the car.

Maya smiles. ''Of course, honey. Bye, have a great day.''

''Sent me updates on the bambina please.'' Carina calls, before she disappears inside the big building.

When Maya opened the door, the three of them were still enjoying their game of Monopoly. Maya put her keys on the table and greeted the three.

''Hi, guys. How was it?''

''Vic and Travis are really kind! Can we please finish our game of Monopoly?'' Sofia asks. The three of them have been getting to know each other better while playing the game. Sofia is really enjoying their company.

Maya grabs a drink and takes a seat at the table. ''Sure, if they want to stay.''

''Of course we do. Sofia is a great kid, Maya.'' Vic says.

''I know.'' Maya smiles. She looks at Sofia proudly. She never thought she would become a mother this way, but she won't complain about it though.

Half an hour later, both Vic and Sofia are broke. Vic and Travis left shortly after. Maya thanked them and let them out.

''What would you like to do today, Soof?''

''Can we go for a bike ride today?'' She asks. This doesn't same like a good idea to Maya.

''Are you sure bubs, you just got out of the hospital two days ago.''

Sofia doesn't seem to care about that. ''But I'm not in any pain, and I want to test my new bike, she says.''

Carina would probably be mad about this, but Maya gives in. ''Alright then, but please tell me if you want to stop. Do you know how to ride a bike?''

Sofia looks shocked. '' I'm Dutch. If you're Dutch, you're able to ride a bike.'' She says, with a little bit of surprise in her voice, but it doesn't sound sassy.

''If you say so, I will go grab your helmet.'' Maya replies and she starts looking for Sofia's helmet.

Sofia is not pleased about that. She has been riding a bike since she was four years old, and she never wore a helmet. ''Is that really necessary? I never wear a helmet when I ride my bike.''

Maya was not about to give in this time. ''Either you wear your helmet, or we stay home.'' She gives Sofia a choice. ''I don't want you to get hurt again.''

''fine''

They both grab their bikes and ride of. Maya is shocked by how fast Sofia's recovery is. Also, Sofia was right. She is indeed a very good biker. She is showing of her ability to bike without her hands on the handlebars.

''Sofia, I know you are a good biker, but keep at least one hand on your handlebars please.'' Maya can't have Sofia falling again.

Sofia pouts a little but listens. "Awhh.. But I like biking like this.''

Maya laughs. ''Too bad bubs.''

They bike 5 miles before returning home. Sofia goes up to her room to play her new guitar, while Maya works a bit. They watch a movie together and finish a puzzle, before Carina comes home.

''I'm home!'' She calls out.

''Were in the living room, come here.'' Carina could hear Maya calling for her.

Carina walks in the room.

''How was your day honey?'' Maya asks.

Carina leans in for a kiss. ''It was a slow day, bella. I'll go start on dinner.''

After dinner, the three of them watch a movie together before Maya and Carina put Sofia to bed. They go back to the living room and sit on the couch together.

''I have the results here bambina, shall we look?'' Carina has her laptop on her lap. Her mail inbox is infront of her.

''No matter what the results are babe, we will be alright.'' Maya says.

Carina opens the email from the clinic.

''522! Bambina that means.'' Carina looks at Maya.

Maya smiles at her wife. ''We're pregnant Carina.''
