Virgil's P.O.V

Over the years I learned everything I could from my father. Growing up I also started to open up more to people. In my past life, I was a major introvert. I did get a job and even made friends with my boss but I never managed to get past that. Growing up thinking I was nothing didn't help.

In this life, however, I wasn't just loved by my father but also by most of the village who helped raise me. There are only about 100 of us. So I know practically everyone. It helped me come out of my shell. Eventually, more children were born who were younger than me. I kind of became a big brother to them which I love. Ellie, Marx, Neal, and Gloria. Two girls and two boys. Ages range from 8-10.

I'm currently 17 and going through one of the most painful things. Even counting my last life I never felt this kind of sadness. The sadness of knowing I'm going to lose the only parent I have left. Dad's been sick for about a year now. The village healer tried everything but he needs medicine that none of us can afford.

"Hey now. Don't cry," my father says. I'm sitting by his bed with my head in my hands. I immediately look up and wipe my face.

"Hey, Dad. Do you need anything?" I ask as I grab his hand.

"No. I'm okay. I need to give you something though," he says. He reaches for the small table I placed next to his bed. It's a letter.

"When I'm gone I want you to take this letter to Lord Rowen in Saluis. I've left you some money in the box over there. As well as a gift. It will get you to Saluis," he says. Another tear falls but I take the letter anyway. "You've grown up to be an amazing young man. Your mother would be as proud of you as I am," he adds.

"Thank you. For being the best dad anyone could ask for," I tell him.

He smiles and tells me he wouldn't want to be anyone else.

"Get some rest," I say softly. He nods and tells me that he loves me. "I love you too Dad," I say back. I stand up and make my way to my room to sleep.

I wake up the next morning, get ready, freshen up, and clean my teeth before going out to make a light breakfast for my dad. When I'm done I put it on a tray and take it to him.

"Time to eat Dad," I say and walk closer. I set the tray aside on the table. "Dad?" I ask.

When he still doesn't answer I immediately lean down and take his pulse. Tears begin to fall and I find it difficult to stay on my feet. So I sit on the chair and grab his hand. He's already cold so it's been a few hours. At least he went peacefully.

I take the blanket and cover him up. After a minute of crying and holding his hand, I stand up. I need to let Elder Rayne know. I step outside and almost bump into Shayla. "Oh. Virgil. I brought some things for your father. How is he?" she says with a small smile. She must see the pain on my face because she deflates and her smile fades.

"I'm so sorry sweetie," she says as she sets the basket she was carrying down. She pulls me into a hug. I'm a bit taller than her so I have to lean down but I don't mind. She holds me as I cry softly. After a long moment, I pull back.

"He went sometime in the night," I tell her.

"At least he went peacefully. He's with your mother now and I know they're watching over you," she says.

"I can get Elder Rayne if you'd like," she says.

"Thank you,"  I tell her.

"Of course. I'll be back in a minute," she says and walks away.

Not knowing what to do I go back inside and sit at the table in the living room/kitchen. It seems like forever before Shayla returns with Elder Rayne.

"I'm sorry for your loss Virgil," he says. I simply nod. "We'll begin preparations for your father's funeral. We'll lay him to rest by your mother," he adds.
