Virgil's P.O.V

"Ugh. My head," I groan. I try to put a hand to my head but stop midway. My hand. It's chained. "What the hell?" I ask myself.

What's the last thing I remember? When I finally remember I become alert. I look around me. I'm in some kind of cell. The last thing I remember was that I was attacked. My friends were there. There was a girl who tried to use explosive magic on them but I used my barriers to protect them. Then nothing. I must've been knocked out. Explains the pain.

Obviously, by the looks of things I was taken. Were the others? I look around the rather large cell. It's capable of holding about 15 people. My eyes immediately fall on another person. They're laying on their side not too far and facing away from me.

I move to get closer to them. Luckily the chains are long enough.

"Are you alright?" I ask softly. The person doesn't move.

After a moment of hesitation, I put my hand on their shoulder. As soon as I do the person falls backward completely lifeless. I recoil in shock. They're dead. I scramble back to where I was.

Before I can think or freak out I hear a door opening in the distance. I immediately freeze in place. There's the sound of a gate opening next. Then I hear footsteps coming towards me. I hold my breath as they get closer.

"You're awake," the person says as they come into view. I'm not sure what I expected but it wasn't a short girl who might be my age.

"Who are you?" I ask.

"My name is Kaya Carnet," she says.

"You are?" she asks.

"You don't know? Aren't you one of the people who brought me here?" I ask.

"Yes. I know who you are but I don't know anything beyond that. So what's your name?" she responds.

"Virgil Crow," I say a bit hesitant.

"Well Virgil, I need you to come with me. Don't bother trying to escape. I'm stronger than I look and your magic is being suppressed temporarily," Kaya says. She pulls out a key and opens the cage before walking in. I watch as she walks closer and unlocked the chain that's securing me to the wall. She leaves the cuffs on. Then she walks out, gesturing for me to follow her.

I stand up and do just that. She leads me through what looks like an actual dungeon. We pass through a gate that she turns back to lock. Then she keeps walking. We walk up a small spiral staircase that ends up leading us to a corridor.

"Where am I?" I ask her.

"King Daxton's castle," she says. My mouth falls open slightly in surprise.

"Why am I here?" I ask after a moment. Although, I think I already know why.

"All will be explained when we get to the throne room. First though you need to get presentable. We can't have you meeting the king looking the way you are," she responds.

She leads me through the castle to a nice-looking bedroom somewhere on the second floor.

"The bath is behind that screen. Go wash up," she says. To be honest I want to say no just to put off meeting the king but I feel gross. "I'll wait outside. There are clothes on the bed when you're finished. Food on the table once you're dressed. The cuffs stay on," she adds.

I nod and watch her leave. With a sigh, I walk over and get undressed. I quickly bathe. The cuffs are annoying but they don't impede me in any way. When I'm finished I dry off and get dressed. Once again in my life, I'm given clothes much nicer than the ones I own. Not that I care.
