Chapter Sixteen

Virgil's P.O.V

"Get back here!" Empran yells after me. Even though I flinch I don't stop.

"The kiss," I say.

When Roman kissed me he transferred a type of liquid into my mouth. It must've been the potion that he gave the others.

"Later," Roman tells me. Despite wanting to immediately ask questions I do as he says. I don't say anything else. We run to a house a bit of the way from the market. I'm about to tell Roman we need to run farther but we get inside and I see my other friends.

"Time to go," Roman says. I watch with surprise as he lifts his hand and creates a gate. The others all run through first. Then Roman pushes me through before following himself. As soon as we're on the other side the gate disappears.

I turn to Roman. Before I can say anything he puts a pendant around my neck.

"We should start heading back," Roman says turning to the others.

"Wait a second! What the fuck?! Are you guys insane?" I ask them.

"We had a plan and it worked. We all got away," Remus says.

"What if your plan hadn't worked? Why would you all risk your lives for some half-assed plan?" I ask.

"Are you actually upset? We did save you," Janus says.

"I'm thankful but that doesn't change the fact that the lot of you could've been killed. So yes I'm upset. What the hell were you thinking?" I say and ask them.

"You're our friend Virgil. We couldn't just leave you to those people. Would you have if it was one of us?" Patton says as he hugs me. I hug him in return.

"Thank you guys," I say to them all when Patton pulls back.

"Sure thing Virgil," Remus says.

"We should get going. This place isn't safe," Logan says.

"Logan's right. Let's head back to the manor," Roman says. We all nod in agreement.

"Where are we?" I ask as we leave out the front door.

Ollie explains everything that's happened since I was taken. He tells me about how they snuck out and left the manor to come here after getting a note from someone who could help save me. He explains how they met Kaya's family.

"So Kaya's okay?" I ask him.

"Yes. She left with her mother to stay with some family somewhere in Agberge. Her sister Maya joined up with them after telling us where you'd be today," he says.

"That's good," I say with relief.

She was so kind to me so I'm glad she got away.

"So what was it like being trapped there?" Remus asks.

I tell them everything that I did. From the moment I woke up in the dungeon of Deonem's castle, to meeting the others, to breaking Sedaren's crystal ball, getting a new one, and eventually what led up to heading to Dianen. The only thing I leave out is what almost happened with Elijah. I don't think they need to know about that.

So I'm surprised when Ollie asks if I'm okay after what happened with Elijah.

"How do you know about that?" I ask him. He tells me how they all found out.

"Oh. Well, I'm okay. Other than feeling grossed out when he kissed my neck nothing else happened," I tell him. We walk all day before we stop to rest for the night next to a stream. The night is warm when we all lay down to sleep. All except Ollie who stays up on watch. He wakes me a few hours later to switch. The fire is burning low. I was already awake but I didn't say that. I stand up to walk to the edge of our campsite to sit against a tree. As soon as I stand up I notice Roman is still awake and sitting where I was gonna go. I hesitate for only a moment before walking over to him.
