Yesterday has come and gone. A lot is going on now in our household, with my mom working every day to plan our graduation party. I can see her walking around with her phone connected to her ear, talking rapidly to our many relatives. The key people that count are on my father's side. The ones in my mother's family act like we no longer exist. Hell, my grandmother kidnapped my twin brother when we were only 3 days old. The trauma Aries went through haunted him for years. The scars on his body tell a story that only he knows. I'm still waiting for the day when he will decide to open up and share the story with me. But that will be a long time from now. He is still trying to fight his inner demons.
Every day, I see a fresh change in my brother. His eyes are brighter. He walks with a slight spring in his step. These changes started on the night when my parents and uncle rescued him. That day, they also found a 5-year-old girl in another area where my brother was being held. My uncle raised her until we met the biological father some years later. Over several years, my brother and Bai became closer than they should have. But we all know you can't help who you fall in love with. And the fact she could bring my brother out of his darkness gave her a special place in our hearts.
Aries' decision to become a law student threw all of us for a loop. For years he was the hard headed trouble maker the one my parents thought would end up following in my father's footsteps. The person who had no problems getting into fights and going around with a distant gleam in his eyes.
The other thing that helped to end my brother's lifelong torment was when he finally got his revenge against our grandma.
I haven't sat and talked with my family about what I want to do after graduation. After growing up and watching what happened with Aries as a child, I decided when I got older. I would take over our business.
Anyone who hurts my family becomes my enemy. I'm not done with my mother's relatives either. I still have something in store for my grandfather and his family. All those years of abuse and neglect she suffered at their hands. I will never forgive the hurt and pain my mother and brother went through.
During dinner, I glanced at everyone around the table, caught my father's eye, and nodded my head. I don't have to voice what choice I made. All it took was a secret look between the two of us. And my father knew my decision.
Mom tapped her spoon against her drinking glass, drawing our eyes to her as she stood up and cleared her throat. "Boys, starting next week, both of you will need to get your outfits together for the party. I know you want a pool party, but for something this important, we will use the ballroom and dining hall for your coming of age/graduation celebration."
"Ugh, mom really. Can you not do that? I'm sure Aries will agree with me when I say we want something more teenage friendly. One where we can just hang out and party with our friends from school. Not a bunch of old people." I could tell the second the words spewed out of my mouth; I had dug my grave. You could clearly see my mom was furious now. Slowly, my mother walked around the table to where I sat, grabbed me by the ear, and twisted.
"Well, it's us, old people, that raised you, wiped your behind when you were little, and supported you all this time. So, honor these elderly people with your presence. Those who raised you, wiped your behind when you were little, and supported you all this time."
My brother, coughing behind his hand, lowered his eyes and mumbled, "Entitled much, mother."
I glanced over at my father and Uncle Vince, hoping the two of them could stop my mother from wanting to unlive me there on the spot. My uncle winked at me, snorted, and mouthed "You're on your own kiddo."
All we could do under my mother's hands was nod and agree to request. With dinner finished, both me and Aries rose from the table grabbing our dishes. But not before my brother bowed to our mother mockingly saying, "Yes, your highness. As you wish, your majesty." Quickly grabbing my brother by his collar, I pulled him around the corner. Good thing I did because the next thing we knew, Mom had thrown one of her sneakers at the spot where my brother had just been standing. He stuck his head back into the dining room. "Mom your aim sucks. I can't believe you missed that."
"Aries, I would seriously stop with the wisecracks. Remember, I know where you sleep, you little brat."
We ducked back into the kitchen, placed our dirty dishes in the sink, and heard our mother telling our father if only Plan B hadn't failed. The idiot, of course, walked back through the dining room behind my mother, wrapped her in a massive hug, saying you know "you love us no matter what we say or do."
Mom glared at our father. Angel, I hate you sometimes. Why are you sitting there letting this boy bully me? Aries tickled her so much that she laughed and snorted like a pig. Dad just grinned and Uncle Vince walked over, patting my mother on the head. "Awe hush, there little piggy. You know the boys won't hurt you. They're only playing around."
She glared angrily at my uncle, kicking her leg out at him, which he turned and grabbed. While dad stood there laughing at my mom. Vince and Aries carried her through the backyard and tossed Mom into the swimming pool.
Bianca came up sputtering and wiping water from her face "I hate being the only woman in the damn house. There are too many of you morons.
