"Conan, for the love of God. Just as him out!" August cried out as they walk along the beach.
Conan shrugged, "What if he doesn't like me like that?"
August looked at him incredulously before groaning. "If you don't, I will."
"I doubt your girlfriend would like that."
"She'd understand if it meant the obvious pining would stop."
August had been trying to convince Conan to ask Austin out since they shared their New Year's kiss together. Conan was sure that the kiss meant nothing. They were both drunk (they had each had one drink) and it was a simple peck (they left the room to make out). He was sure that everything between them had meant nothing to Austin.
"Have you seen her?" Conan asked, unlocking his phone to show August a photo of said girl. "Look at her. I'm not even half as pretty as her."
August scoffed, "Are you serious? Look at yourself, Conan," She looked around only to see that there wasn't a mirror near then and sighed. "Look. Heather has nothing on you, okay? Plus, he probably doesn't even like her. You don't hook up with people you like. That's probably why he hasn't hooked up with you yet."
Conan's apprehension melted away as August's words sank in. "But what if I'm wrong, August? What if I misread the signs? I don't want to ruin everything."
August squeezed Conan's hand gently. "Conan, I can't promise you that things will work out perfectly. But I can promise you this: regret is far worse than the fear of rejection. Life is too short to wonder 'what if.' You deserve to find happiness, and you'll never know unless you take that leap."
Conan squinted at her, "Oh, my God. You're deluded."
They laughed together before leaving the beach and walking back to August's house. The singer and actress sat down together and turned on the television, slipping into silence as The Simpsons theme began playing. August eventually fell asleep on Conan's lap, her legs thrown over her lap as Lilo crawled onto her chest.
When Gracie and Austin arrived, August was woken back up. They made their way back to the beach.
August felt the warm sand beneath her feet as she stood on the beach, her heart filled with happiness. She couldn't have imagined a more perfect day to spend with her closest friends and her girlfriend, Gracie. Austin and Conan were laughing and splashing in the waves, their infectious energy spreading like wildfire.
Gracie, with her radiant smile and playful spirit, walked up to August and intertwined their fingers. "Isn't this just the best day ever, August?" she exclaimed, her eyes shimmering with delight.
