August awoke suddenly, her heart pounding against her chest as beads of perspiration clung to her forehead. She glanced at the clock beside her bed, its digital display reading 2:37 AM. The room was shrouded in darkness, illuminated only by the faint glow of the moon filtering through the curtains. She turned to her side, her eyes fixated on the peaceful face of her boyfriend, Matteo, who lay sound asleep beside her.
In that moment, a wave of doubt washed over August, spurred by haunting memories of a failed past relationship. Gracie had made loving her seem like a burden, a chore that drained her energy and enthusiasm and then even going so far as to announce it to the world in her song. The scars of those painful words still lingered in her heart, even though Matteo had done everything to show her how much he cared.
Unable to bear the weight of her insecurities any longer, August took a deep breath and mustered the courage to wake Matteo. She gently nudged his shoulder, and as he stirred awake, she could see the grogginess fade from his eyes, replaced by concern.
"August, what's wrong? Is everything okay?" Matteo asked, his voice filled with sleep-induced concern.
August hesitated for a moment, the words she had rehearsed countless times in her mind suddenly feeling insufficient. "Matteo, I need to ask you something. It's been on my mind for a while now," she began, her voice quivering slightly.
Matteo propped himself up on one elbow, his gaze fixed on August. "Of course, love. You can ask me anything. You know that, right?"
August nodded, grateful for his understanding and support. She took a deep breath, gathering her thoughts before she spoke. "You know about my past relationship, right? The one that ended badly?"
"As opposed to the other ones?" He tried to joke, but when August didn't laugh, he stopped.
"Matteo," August said softly.
Matteo nodded, his expression growing more serious. "Yeah, I know. You've mentioned it before. But you don't have to worry about that. I'm here for you, and I love you completely."
Tears welled up in August's eyes as she continued, her voice quivering with vulnerability. "Sometimes, I can't help but wonder if loving me is a chore for you too. Gracie made it seem that way, like loving me was a burden. And it scares me that maybe I'm too much for someone to handle."
Matteo reached out, his hand gently wiping away her tears. "August, listen to me. I understand why you're feeling this way, but I want you to know that loving you is anything but a chore. You bring light into my life, and every moment with you is a gift. I'm here because I want to be, because I choose to be."
