It wasn't my fault

"I want to publicly apologize for the damage I have caused and I promise I will pay for my crimes.  But first, I would like to speak with Noay, please."  At first this request is met with quiet whispers of confusion, as no one is sure why exactly Sorren wants to meet with the Prince.  However, Noay steps forward without argument and follows Sorren into the castle, a worried look on his face.

"Ren, I don't understand!  What happened?  Why would you help the bandits?"  Noay whispers, the words are soft but they seem almost like a command and Sorren nods solemnly.

"I swear to you I have a good reason, but I know the kingdom will not hear of it."

"Explain."

"The bandits were threatening you, wanting to kill you so that Earnest was the heir to the throne and when I found out, I knew I couldn't let that happen so instead-"

"You decided that they could have you instead?"  Noay asks, dumbfounded.  "That's a terrible idea!  Think of what they could have done to you!  You should have just let them take me!"

"I couldn't let them hurt you, love.  I don't want to see you in that kind of pain, okay?  I'll admit, it was a stupid decision but in the end, you're alive aren't you?"

"Ren..."

"It's okay, Noay. I'm willing to pay for my crimes against the kingdom.  The people deserve justice and that's what I'll give them."

"But you don't deserve to be exiled!  Or worse they could decide not to have mercy!  Listen Ren, a long time ago, when both of us were just people, I made a promise to you.  One that I do not intend to break.  So stop trying to carry a burden meant for two and let me help you."

Sorren is quiet for a moment before he nods slowly.  "I accept."

"Good.  Although I was going to help either way."

Together they lived.

Together they fought.

Together they died.
