The Broncos are 4-1 and Sean Payton is sleeping like a baby – drooling and wetting the bed. But that's beside the point. He is nearly 60. That's an age where these things are just becoming more common. Ok? So, could you drop it. The important point is the nightmares are gone.
He hasn't felt this confident going into a big game since ... Doesn't matter. The Broncos are only looking forward. And ahead lies the battle for the AFC West. Mahomes and Wilson go head-to-head, and one can feel that it's two of the greatest battling it out. The Chiefs have the slight edge going into the last quarter due to some amazing extended plays by Mahomes and a trick play where VIP guest player Peter Dinklage of HBO's Game of Thrones quarterback sneaks through the legs of all linemen.
But Russ is cooking. As an appetizer he dishes up a 35-yard dart to the outside to Courtland Sutton. He follows it up with a spicy side arm throw to Greg Dulcich. Keeps feeding his receivers and finally slices through the D-line on a designed QB run for the touchdown.
"Giving you some food for thought?" Payton asks over at Andy Reed during the commercial break.
Reed licks his lips in anticipation: "What do you think? Scramble more rice?"
Payton looks confused and worried.
Mahomes gets the ball. Scans the field. Then leaves the collapsing pocket. Pump fakes. Runs in a circle to avoid Randy Gregory and further to the sideline. Finally, a short pass to Skyy Moore just before he steps out of bounds. Moore takes a couple of steps then laterals it to Rashee Rice who has the open field ahead of him. They stop him before the end zone but Kansas City scores on the next play.
Reed smiles: "Delicious."
The match boils down to a battle of the offenses. And Russ serves another long touchdown pass as a dessert. There is less than a minute left in the game.
Payton gets triumphant again: "Fed up, yet?"
"Do I look like someone that gets fed up? Okay, I got one more play. Want to know what I call that one?" Reed replies while his team hasn't even reached their own 40.
Payton shrugs it off but gets nervous as he sees all of the Chiefs players raising first themselves and then their arms up. They clap in unison three times, then go back into their stance and start the play. Payton tries to identify the trick play, but all Mahomes does is take two steps back and pass the ball to the right side-line. Marquez Valding-Scantling raises his hands to catch the ball, but Justin Simmons is close by. Valding-Scantling lowers his hands again and runs a couple more yards. Now Simmons is too close. He jumps out of the way to avoid the pass interference. Bad decision. MVS catches the ball, runs into the endzone, and throws away his helmet.
"I call it 'It's a Miracle'!" Reed gloats.
Now that was hard to swallow.
