Chapter nineteen

_____

Earlier in the year

' The gate ! I think we're locked in. Again. '

' Then Salazar Slytherin is not yet finished with us. '

It must have been more than half an hour since Sebastian, Ominis and I have been stuck in this gigantic basement created by the ancestor of the Gaunts under the school.

It's a real maze ! Each time we manage to open a door, it leads us to a corridor that leads nowhere.
This place is very creepy; with the cold and damp stone walls, the torches hung on them which are surrounded by cobwebs, and the different statues of snakes that can be found everywhere in the alleys...
It's nothing reassuring.

And now we are stuck in front of a large door, on which are carved several tormented faces, in the grip of disarray and deep melancholy.

Slytherin's dungeon is colorful compared to this sinister place.

As the boys mourn our fate, I notice a dismembered skeleton lying on the floor against a wall.

In shock, I can't help but jump up and clasp my hand to my mouth to hold back a cry. I've seen a lot of atrocities since I entered Hogwarts, sure, but I never expected to come face to face with the decaying remains of what was once a human being !

My comrades seem to have noticed it but do not react.
Are they used to seeing this or do they hide their surprise very well... ?

Next to this corpse, a yellowed sheet with a burnt corner was left abandoned.

I lean down and grab it. It's a bit damp and the ink has smudged some words, but it's still legible.

I scan it quickly and my eyes stop on the signature at the bottom left of the paper. It's from Noctua Gaunt, Ominis' aunt !

I've lost hope. I'm locked in. I heard a scream and saw the tortured faces. The only way forward is with an Unforgivable Curse. Even if I wanted to cast it, I have no one upon whom to do so. Salazar Slytherin created a malicious challenge indeed.

In my last correspondence to my brother, I'd invited him here. Now, if he looks for me alone, I'll have led him to his death. Despite our differences, I wish him no ill. I wish we had parted on better terms.

Noctua Gaunt

It's awful, she didn't deserve to die like that. She just wanted to learn more about her ancestor, but curiosity got the better of her...
I have to tell my friend.

' Ominis. A skeleton. And Noctua's last journal entry. She mentions being trapped here - blocked by an Unforgivable Curse. '
