Sara Jay Palmer
The world must have fallen out of its axis when Mason Green, the school's soccer team captain and one my subject for writing, greeted me all smiles this morning as I open my locker.
"So I believe you would write something 'bout me, huh? I know, I know, people can't resist my charm." He raised his arm as if he's winning a trophy and brushed his hair with his hands.
"Well if they knew how air-headed you are. Then maybe they won't agree that much." I mentally rolled my eyes. How could anyone be as arrogant as this boy?
"Whoa there! I am just kidding Ms. Nerdy." He chuckled. "I have a name you know. It's Sara."
"Oh I know. We've been at the same class since... middleschool!" As if on cue, his friends walked towards him. I slowly walked away hoping they won't see me leave. But I guess I was wrong.
"Hey where are you going?" I heard Mason's voice and I stopped.
"Disappearing." I answered without looking back.
"Well meet me later here at lunch." And I scrammed.
During second period, I can't take my mind off my task. Like how can I be an insider and still have my life? I have to schedule. Right. Schedule. I guess Monday to Wednesday will be for Mason and Thursday to Saturday is for Chase then maybe Sunday is for myself and gather my information. The smart child in me finally thought of something clever.
The bell rang and I realized I have to face Mason. Great. Worst case scenario is he'll pour pig's blood on me and laugh at me for being a loner and a geek.
Mason Green
Dammit! That was utterly stupid!
My mind keeps going back to my early encounter with Sara. It's the dumbest thing to say. Everybody likes me? Come on Mason! Are you a nut job? She totally thinks you're an asshole. Well maybe it's better than not knowing me at all. I've known Sara since middle school when she came in late for the first day. Everyone was so fascinated by her auburn hair and big brown eyes and cheeky grin that some boys from my class started giving her attention. But I guess she doesn't love attention as she tends to move away when she'd being flocked by other students.
Maybe it's time to change that impression later at lunch. I just can't wait to see her and tell her I'm not an asshole. But... Why do I feel so giddy inside? Ugh never mind. I must be hungry. Just as when the bell rang, I stood immediately and darted outside the classroom hearing my friends calling me.
She was standing by her locker alone. Come to think of it, she is always alone.
"Hey. Ready for lunch?" I asked nicely.
"Yeah sure. Ecstatic." Her sarcasm just made her look so cute. I walked with her to the canteen but she was a bit uneasy.
"Are you okay?"
"Uhm no. Your friends are staring and your girlfriend is stabbing me with her looks." She looked down as I look at my friends telling them to cut it off. They just smiled and returned to what they were doing.
"But I don't have a girlfriend Sara."
"Well Macy thinks she is. So maybe it's better if I observe your life somewhere without a possible a death." She fiddled with her fingers and I swear at that moment, I just want to hold them.
"Oh. You're right." She snapped her head back. "She thinks she's my girlfriend. But truthfully, I don't have one. And I like it when you observe the life I live... everyday?" I giggled at the thought of spending everyday with her.
"Err, sorry. But I am on a schedule. You see, Mr. Catnip made me write about you... and about another person. So I have to observe him as well." She smiled as she grabbed an apple, cinnamon bun, milk box, a bowl of pasta and gummy bears.
"You do sure eat a lot. And you said him? Who's the other guy?" It kinda turns me on when a girl is not conscious of the calories she ate and doesn't waste a conversation just by counting them. But when I heard she's observing another guy, I just want to get angry. But I know I can't, I shouldn't.
"You know Chase Humphry right? Well he's the other guy. But don't get jealous. I still have tomorrow with you. Tomorrows Wednesday right?" I moved her hand as she was about to pay and I took out my cash. She eyed me a questioning look.
"I got it. Yes, I know him. And yes, tomorrow's Wednesday." And yes I am jealous. She mumbled a thank you as I led her to our seat. My friends looked at us with confusion thinking I must have hit my head pretty hard. But before I could explain, Sara already spoke.
"It's not that we're dating. I just have to be an insider to him three times a week for a story on the school paper." She stammered a little and smiled. She was trying to hide the blush on her face but I totally saw it.
"Who are you?" Liam, a friend of mine asked her like she just got out from Mars and landed on Earth.
"Sara. I'm Sara." She looked down at her food trying to hide her emotion.
My friends just nodded and continued talking like she wasn't even there.
"So you said Chase Humphry? You know he's a pretty dangerous guy." I tried to get her to look up so I know if she's hurt by what Liam said. But I guess she's pretty good at hiding her emotion.
"How did you know?" Her soft lips were slightly parting as she looked at me waiting for an answer. All I want now is to capture this moment. I was surely taken aback by how beautiful she really is.
"U-uhm... Y-you know. Rumors." I never stutter to any girl in my life. I was always so confident. But Sara, I don't know. Something in her is so different. I was expecting her to bombard me with questions and gossip. But I was a little bit surprised to found her looking down at her food eating her heart out.
