Sara Jay Palmer

"Sara? Sara?" Mason waved his hand in front of me. I must have been dazing.

"Sorry. Uhm. I-i... I don't know. Why do I have to choose? Why should I choose? These past few months have been amazing hanging out with the two of you."

"I'm sorry Sara, but I am not the one who shares. You see I really like you and I hate it when you hang out with guys especially this...guy over here." Chase rattled.

"And I don't want you to be hanging out with him either." Mason added.

My heart tells me to forget everything and never to choose between the two. But deep in my deepest heart, I know I have to.

"Please give me time." And that's the moment I cursed myself for not being sporty. I must have looked funny when running. But I have to get out of there.

*

It's the month before graduation. And I haven't chosen anyone yet. People around me must have thought I'm in medschool since the stress level I've been feeling and emitting is over the roof. Chase would drive by every now and then but he won't know at my door. He'd just stare at my bedroom window for minutes then leave. I would catch Mason staring at me during lunch. I know I placed the both of them in misery. But I am in one too.

So that's when I decided to finally choose. And I hope I would do the right thing.

I drove down to Mason's house and a sleepy boy welcomed me.

"Mom's out." He mumbled. Clearly I woke him up. We went to his room and he looked at me straight in the eyes.

"I get the feeling why you're here. But before that. I would like to say something."

He got an envelope on his drawer and showed it to me.

"I got a scholarship at Harvard." He smiled and butterflies erupted in my stomach.

"Wow Mason! You overdid yourself. This is amazing. Wow, this is the coolest thing ever." I hugged him.

"I know." He smiled back. "But I have to tell you one more thing. This past weeks I've been thinking."

I nod to let him continues.

"Sara, you're the greatest girl I've ever met. Except for my mom and she actually likes you. But now, I am going to Harvard. And that is miles and miles away from you. That's when I realized I have to give you up to that... guy." He smiled brightly. I don't know if he's hiding the pain or he is genuinely happy for me.

"I know I've hurt you and I am sorry." He laughed, like really laughed. And we have the egoistic Mason back!

"But in all honesty, I like you very very much Sara. I would still like you when I'm away. But if, and only if you've chosen me. It would only make things worse. I know you have dreams and I don't want to get in the way of that. And come on, we deserve some physical love right?" he winked at me and I punched his shoulder.

"That's why I am actually here Mason. I was contemplating on ways how to say it. But I have chosen Chase." He didn't flinch. He smiled for me. He smiled sincerely. I am seeing a great friendship on the way.

"Well that...guy better not hurt you or I'll take you out with me." and he hugged me again.

I was relieved. More than relieved. Now all I have to do is tell Chase. When I got out Mason's house, I saw his motorcycle drifting away faster than a lightning bolt.
