It was exactly twenty eight days, three hours and forty two minutes until the most important day of Aliya Levine's life.

That wasn't even an over exaggeration, and to be perfectly honest, it seemed more like an under exaggeration for how much this day meant to her.

Her entire surgical career thus far had been leading up to this one single moment, and each minute that passed was one step closer to the test that would determine her a future as a surgeon, as a doctor, as a person.

There was no way she could take her mind off of it now.

For the past weeks, months and years she had been preparing herself for the time when she would have to sit in front of a panel of doctors and prove herself. Prove that she was more than her last name, and that she had what it took to be a qualified surgeon.

It was the test that she had spent her entire life preparing for, and the one she had spent countless hours of her day studying for.

Aliya studied for it in the scrub room, tying knots on her surgical mask with Derek stood keenly beside her, endlessly questioning her between patients and consults. Which surgical approach for thoracic disk herniations is associated with the highest rate of neurologic injury? Midline laminectomy.

It felt as though a bright light should be shone directly into her eye during these moments, and Derek wearing a detective badge at his waist band. Which approach is favoured for a patient with an 8-mm acoustic neuroma in which hearing preservation is a goal? Middle fossa.

Though, the studying became a novelty now, one where Aliya's lips curved into a wide grin as she closed each question with a new line that made Derek roll his eyes fondly at her, or remind her of the fact that she couldn't possibly say that in front of the panel of surgeons who probably wouldn't understand her sense of humour.

"It would be a miracle if Susan saw her pet rattlesnake again." Aliya commented, tearing off a piece of her donut and popping into a mouth with a thoughtful expression on her face.

Derek, who had decided to dedicate his life to studying with her, raised a confused brow, looking at her with sleep deprived eyes. "Since when did Susan have a rattlesnake? And, when did I say her name was even Susan?"
