I stared at Tristan and Katie. They just shrugged. There wasn't much they could do. They had already mated.
"Miss Blake, Mr. Sanoman, it looks like you two are going to work together," Miss Gable said, smiling. "Now then, pair up now."
Reluctantly, I approached Jake. I did not want to. Considering he gave me a sour look, he wasn't too happy about the situation either.
"Together you will hunt down a wild Mystic and then try to calm it down, show it that you are not dangerous. Befriend it." She looked out over the class. "I'll give you a Mystic to track down, together. Use each other's strengths. If one of you is good at tracking, let them track. If one of you is good at communicating with a Mystic, let them communicate. Understood?"
The class nodded in understanding.
Miss Gable went around to each of the couples and gave them a picture of the Mystic they were to find. Below the picture were some facts about each animal that could be a helping hand in the search. Me and Jake were last. We were going to look for a wild unicorn. Another magical animal in Canai. One of the hardest to make friends with. Miss Gable had given us quite a challenge.
As soon as we got our Mystic we set off for the only logical place a unicorn could possibly be. The forest.
Jake went ahead, while I took a little longer. He turned every now and then, sighing when he realized I was still lagging behind. But I didn't take it as an insult. Sometimes it was better to be slow, thoughtful. Apparently he didn't know that.
We were getting closer to the forest with each step we took. Jake continued to go first, be the leader. I came after. Suddenly he completely disappeared from my field of vision. I was left alone. But I wasn't scared at all. I found my way back to Mystic if I had to. But I didn't want to leave Jake. I didn't want to fail the class.
I entered the dark forest. A quarter had passed now, and Jake was nowhere to be seen. Maybe he had turned back? Left me out here? He couldn't have done that, could he? He wasn't that selfish, was he?
Suddenly I heard a bang so loud that I jumped. Jake came rushing out of the forest with the wild unicorn hot on his heels. It was busy trying to stab him with its horn. At least now I didn't have to take the time to look for it anymore.
I followed the unicorn with my eyes for a while as it chased Jake. It lunged after him again, and this time managed to knock him over. Jake landed on his bum, sat comfortably and watched as I did mine.I whistled at the unicorn, making it stop immediately.
Easy.
I held out my hand as I slowly walked towards it. Took a slow step, and another. I reached it, reached out to the muzzle, just like I had done with Alastor.
I told the unicorn to stay put as I walked over to Jake.
I offered him help to get up, but he dismissed it.
"I don't need your help," he hissed.
I withdrew my hand. "Suit yourself," I said, walking back to the unicorn. "I was just trying to help."
Jake gave me a sour look.
We went back to Mystic, me with the unicorn and Jake a little ahead, like before. He must've wanted to arrive quickly.
The great building that was Mystic was getting closer with every step we took. We would gather on the lawn outside the Mystic lore classroom.
We were last. Only Tristan, Katie and Miss Gable remained.
I pulled up next to Jake. "You know we were meant to work together, right?" I asked.
He turned, stopped with his hands in his pockets. His blue eyes looked intently into mine. "We did," he said. "I did my part, you did yours."
I rolled my eyes. "We were meant to talk. To each other."
He shrugged, hands still in his pockets. "But we succeeded with the task, did we not?"
He didn't seem to care one bit how it went. The only thing he seemed to care about was making spitting comments towards me.
I walked over to Miss Gable who was preparing for the unicorn's journey home. I pushed the picture of it into her arms, so hard that she couldn't catch up. I also gave Jake an angry look before walking over to Tristan and Katie who had been faithfully waiting for me in the cold.
Together we went to the Dining Room.
