I sat in the passenger seat. I had tried to sit in the back, but the man standing in the doorway had insisted that I should be in the front. After complaining about it, I gave in, agreed to what he wanted.
The guard sat in the back middle while the man standing in the doorway sat in the driver's seat.It was now that it hit me I had forgotten to ask what his name was. I cleared my throat. "Excuse me," I said, "but I don't know your names."
The man, who now had started the car, answered quickly, "I'm so sorry, Miss Blake, I seem to have forgotten the most important thing." He turned to me. "Liam," he said. "Liam Stone."
"Stone..." I said. "I recognize that, are you the same age as Simon?"
He looked at me. "Simon Blake... Yes, I was friends with him for a while. Before... yeah you know."
I nodded. "Before the accident."
"How is he?" Liam seemed to genuinely care.
"Bad," I answered. "He's barely eating. I'm afraid he won't make it."
Liam nodded. "I understand."
After that we said nothing more, but I just stared out at the open landscape the rest of the way.
Liam turned off onto a narrow road. The road to Mystic. The big, pompous building that was the school towered in the distance. It was impossible not to notice it.
We got closer and closer for every second that passed. I also got closer and closer to my dream. I would get to try to get into Mystic.
Only minutes later all three of us stood outside of the mighty gates. The guard—whose name I now knew was Bruno—set my pack down on the ground to be able to open them.
When he did, I was greeted by a feeling so magical that I had never felt it before. Several hundred children stood in the hall, the staircase and on the upper floor. It was a bit like a fruit peel, it is peeled off piece by piece and then leaves the best behind. Those who passed the test. Now that I thought about it, there was no way I would make it.
I swallowed deeply when we commonly walked through the gates.
