Liam and I had decided to meet in the school cafeteria before our lesson as he didn't like the idea of teaching me by boring me in a regular classroom.
When I entered the cafeteria, I saw him waving to me from his window table. I sat opposite him, glanced at his left arm.
The burn mark from yesterday was clearly visible, but it wasn't as infected anymore.
He followed my gaze and his brow furrowed when he saw what I was looking at."I don't know how I got that," he said. "When I woke up this morning it was just there. My brother fixed it before I went to work."
Liam's brother, yes. Eliott Stone, the famous doctor.
I swallowed deeply. "I know how you got it," I said. "It was me."
I wasn't sure if he wanted to know, but I told him about yesterday's incident anyway. The further into the story I got, the whiter Liam's face became. He looked like he had seen a ghost. It was a wonder he hadn't vomited yet, he looked so bad about what he had done.
"I'm so sorry, Aline," he said. "I don't know what flew into me."
I dismissed his excuse. "You were drunk," I said. "I understand."
"That's not a good excuse," he groaned.
I shrugged and smiled. "That's enough for me."
He smiled at me. "Thank you, Aline," he said, and I saw how he immediately felt better.
After a moment of silence, Liam spoke up. "What do you want to do now?" he asked, taking a bite from his cinnamon bun he ordered before I arrived. He had given me a sticky chocolate cake.
"That's not for me to decide," I said and popped a bite into my mouth. "You're the teacher."
"I've only been for one day, Aline!" he replied. "I found this out yesterday, and it wasn't even from a teacher. It was from you!"
I flinched at his sudden outburst.
He noticed this and then said in a calmer voice: "Sorry, but I'm just so confused."
I looked at him, didn't say a word. Let him continue.
"I have no experience teaching," he said. "I certainly couldn't have been their first choice as your teacher. I can't even keep up with my regular assignments, how am I supposed to keep up with yours? No offense."
"No danger," I said. "I understand. You're angry. I would be too if I were you."
He exhaled and a very low "Thank you" came out of his mouth.
We remained in the school cafeteria for probably half an hour. We just talked. About anything. About everything and nothing.
Suddenly Liam mentioned something he didn't really get to reveal. "Mr. Brock will call a meeting tomorrow morning. In the Hall. He has received important information he wants to share. He told us at the morning meeting."
I raised my eyebrows. "And what is it about?"
This didn't seem so secret. I just found out beforehand.
Liam leaned forward. "A spy," he said. "Which informs the enemy."
"The enemy...?"
"Hector Baluf," he replied quietly. "Canai's current enemy."
