XXXIX. The Gold Eye

Evelyn's P.O.V.

My skin set in goosebumps as a gust of wind brushed past me. My eyes felt like they were glued shut. My body felt heavy and I could feel something hard under me. I tried to open my eyes but with every glimpse of the light and a sound of somebodies voice I was back into the dark. I couldn't keep myself awake long enough to know what was happening, I felt drugged.

It felt like hours had gone by when I was finally awoken by a startling bang on something by my ear. My ears began to ring instantly, jolting me off the cold floor into a seating position, finally opening my eyes to the golden light surrounding my cell. It looked like I was in the holding cells in Tarus, only somehow worse. My head ached and I instantly laid my arms around my bump that wasn't there. My heart trembled. Was it all a dream? Have I given birth already? What is happening, where is my baby?

I looked around me, finally noticing the tall figure standing in front of the bars that were keeping me captive. He smirked, but with the golden light protruding from every angle, I couldn't decipher who I was looking at and I was terrified that it was Chase.

"Well good morning Evelyn. It is a great pleasure to finally have you here." The voice didn't resemble Chase's and I instantly knew the situation was much worse.

"Where am I?"

"You are where it all began. Why I have been hunting you for so long, to keep this place alive and populated and to protect the people I love." He lingered by the bars. Teo.

"You aren't capable of love." I spat back, still constantly cradling my belly that had nobody inside it. It's just titan tricks, it's just titan tricks.

"Well we all thought that Hayden wasn't capable of love either but look at him now, so in love he is willing to kill everyone in all the kingdoms to save your poor soul." He leaned closer into the cell, almost protruding his whole face through it. I had no expectations of his looks, but he didn't look like the monster that he was. He even had freckles which was strange.

"Nobody would need to die if you didn't mess with my family." There was not much I had to lose now.

"Nobody else would need to die if you sacrificed your body to me, to our community. One for the needs of many and all that."

"Hayden will find me and he will kill you." I could only hope, not completely comprehending myself what is happening and where I really am. I hoped that whatever happened to our boy that he was safe and that Hayden was taking care of him.

"Oh trust me, he is trying, but also failing, you and me honestly, I didn't think he was so naïve."

"What are you talking about?"

"Well first of all, he is looking for Chase, who is coincidently in the cell beside you. It's like he has no idea that you are here with me." I fought not to look towards the cell beside me. I knew that Chase being captured by Teo meant that after all he was still trying to help us, but I couldn't face him, not right now.

"I'm not sacrificing myself to you, and I will fight until my dying breath."

"Feel free, I like it rough. It's more fun." He chuckled. I felt my stomach turn. How was I going to fight a titan all on my own? What could I even do to save myself? There was absolutely nothing that I could do now but try and use my powers, but they were going to be useless if the place was swarming with titans. It seemed almost easier to just give in. I was tired of the chase and the pain I had caused to everyone around me. If it all ended now, there would be nothing else left to fight for and everybody could just move on.

Hayden was going to be a great father, and despite my missing belly, I knew that my son had to be somewhere out there and if Hayden wasn't going to find me than he was certainly out looking for our son and so were the rest of the gods. Teo could have me, but not my son.

"Get her out of there." He walked away, gesturing to somebody else beside him.

I expected a henchman maybe, pulling me out of the cell by my collar or by my hair, but within a blink of an eye I was standing in front of a room full of titans and sneering monsters behind them. The room was painted in gold, or perhaps it was real gold, it reflected the light like it was and most of the titans eyes reflected the same. I had seen those golden eyes before and it finally clicked.

This isn't Teo's army. At least not willingly. He had used titan tricks to compel them all, including the many eyes I saw in the Underworld and Olympus. They were all copies of him.

I looked around me, my eyes instantly darting towards the cells that held many more than just Chase. I couldn't tell who else was there, but there was one person that I knew. He was so small he could probably fit through the gaps in the bars. He was curled up on the floor, sobbing quietly. Luka.

For a second I considered that perhaps even if I wasn't going to fight for myself I should fight for Luka. But was it worth it? What was going to happen once Teo used my blood for the Onyx? Perhaps it was safer to get this over with and allow everyone else to get on with their lives freely – that is if Teo was going to release them. Why would he keep them if all he wants and needs is right in front of him? Luka, Chase and every other golden eye out there was just a ploy to get me here.

Teo motioned his arm in a circle and an empty stone pit appeared between us. It had small lines engraved where I assumed my blood would run.

"I don't know how you want to do this? If you insist on fighting then go right ahead, ladies first." Teo motioned to me, before crossing his arms across his chest, just waiting for me to make a move. It seemed insane. This was it? Just us standing in front of each other. No big speech? Nobody chaining me to a chair, nobody torturing me before running my blood dry.

I was lost for a second. Was there even a point? Perhaps he had tricks that would cause me less pain and he could get what he wanted and I could die peacefully. Was it worth it to even try and summon my power. I was tired of fighting.
