XXVIII. Nightingale

I awoke to a heavy and warm kiss on my forehead. My eyes seemed to be glued together, as I tried to open them. The room was still dark, and the sun hadn't risen yet. Nobody needs to be up this early.

"I have to go to work. Dax is in the living room, taking a nap. I'll be back around eight." Hayden whispered and I nodded along, before turning around to continue with my blissful sleep. There was hardly anything that I was willing to care about at that hour.

I began to drift off when I suddenly felt a cold brush of wind. I knew the windows were closed, having closed them before going to sleep, so the only thing that it could have been was the door. Exhaling a frustrating breath, I rubbed my eyes, slowly lifting myself up to see if Hayden had left the door open. Sleep had covered my eyes, creating many cryptic visions in the dark, but one stood out the most. I rubbed my eyes again, to make sure I was just seeing things, but looking over to the corner of the door, there was still that same tall shadow standing by. The door was shut, and the coldness was coming right off the shadow.

"Hayden?" I asked sleepily. Still delirious and sleep-deprived, I lifted myself up. There was no reply, not even a breath or a sound when my heart dropped. My whole body flushed, and I knew it wasn't just a shadow.

A deep inhale echoed across the room, "I have been waiting for a long time Eve." His voice was deep and thundering. It made my heartache in fear as he slowly moved towards my bed. "I gave you a chance to give yourself in. I cannot wait any longer." The man insisted, approaching closer. As he reached the edge of my bed, though I had never seen him before, I knew it was Teo. My heart jumped into my throat as he lunged for me. I opened my mouth to scream, but I was paralyzed by fear until...

"Evelyn?" Though I could hear somebody calling me, I couldn't recognise the voice. My heart was in a panic, and I couldn't stop myself from hyperventilating. All I could see was Teo. My chest felt tight, and I couldn't speak or scream or do anything, just wait, and watch as Teo lunged at me, his hands reaching for my throat.

"No!" I managed, my scream leaving a ringing in my ears as thunder echoed around me. I opened my eyes, the room alight by the morning sun. I could hear groaning and as my eyes travelled towards the sound, I noticed a massive dent in the wall and Dax lying on my bedroom floor. I felt my heart drop, realising what I had done.

"Dax?!" I flung the duvet off me and quickly got to my feet. He was covered in plaster and still groaning. I could tell he was awake but had been caught off guard by my powers and knocked off his feet. I knelt down beside him helping him sit up.

"Are you okay? I'm so sorry."

"Yeah, yeah I'm fine." He brushed the plaster off of his clothes, before moving his neck around and stretching his back. "Are you okay?" He looked up at me, a pained expression still lingering on his face as he began to stand up.

"Yeah, I had a night..." I slowly began to get to my feet when I felt something run down my leg.

"Eve," Dax inhaled a sharp breath, looking down to my pyjama trousers that had soaked with blood. Shock paralyzed my body while I tried to comprehend what was happening. I'm having a miscarriage. I looked down at the floor, watching more and more blood accumulate. From a droop to another, until I could hardly even see the wooden planks. "We have to take you to the hospital." I heard Dax say, but I felt frozen in place. "Eve?" He called again. "Eve?? Eve?!"

"Eve, wake up!" I opened my eyes to Hayden, holding me by my shoulders. His face was pale and worried. "Are you okay? You were having a nightmare." His hand softly travelled up to my cheek as I looked around the room. No dent in the wall, no Dax, the room still dark, with some light coming from the bathroom. "Hey, hey look at me," he lifted my head by the chin as my eyes focused on his. I nodded along, confused by what had happened. I lifted the duvet, removing it from my waist, to check if I was really bleeding, but there was nothing.
