A dim light leaked through my rooms window. I leaned forward and grabbed the alarm clock on the desk. 5:21 was in big green letters as I rolled out of bed. I was always a morning person but right now all my bones in my body were aching and I didn't feel like getting up. Sock peacefully slept by the window. I stood up and my left leg stung a little. I lifted up my pant leg and saw my left calve was swollen, probably from the dart Zachary shot me with. Carefully, I lifted myself up. I headed to the bathroom and brushed out my hair. I decided to leave it down, at least for today.
"Rise and.... Nevermind."
Zachary held a cow bell but put it down on my coffee table when he saw me wide awake and brushing my teeth.
"Training starts today."
"Training?!"
I almost swallow my toothbrush. There was nothing about training that was supposed to be in the way of my escape plan. I needed to get to the Above fast. I started to panic, I would be caught if I didn't get out of here.
"Yes Training. You don't think we have a ѕαfє way of getting out of here do you?
Really naive of you Kait-"
I shove him out of the door. I couldn't do this right now, I started to breathe heavily. My anxiety was taking over my body. What a jerk, yesterday he's tucking my hair behind my ear before saying goodnight and now he's here telling me how stupid I am and acting like nothing happened yesterday.
"Kaitlyn I'm sorry."
Was I mad at him? No, well.. some what considering he's wasting my time. I was wasting my time, I needed to get out of here fast.
"I'll be out in a few minutes let me be alone for now!"
I hear him sigh through the door and footsteps ascend down the hallway.
"Meow."
"I don't know what's wrong with me Sock. I'm so confused. God maybe I am naive."
Sock puts his head underneath my hand and sits on my lap. I stroke him lightly.
"Were going to leave here soon Sock. I promise you that."
"Meow."
After a few minutes of petting sock I look in my closet. I find a pair of black tracks. They are tight and they seem to fit my rear nicely. I find two shirts, a tank top and a sweater. It's too hot for a sweater, so I reluctantly I pick the tank top which is just plain old gray. I take the brown combat boots out and tie the laces. The shirt is fine and the boots just fit. I look in the mirror. I haven't realized how much my appearance had changed, my hair is much longer, not to mention my cheeks have some weird glow. I grab Socks cat food bag that Jake let me have and fill his bowl I found in the cabinets. I take out a small China bowl that held fake leaves and filled it up with water.
"I'll be back to check on you in a couple of hours. Stay safe."
"Meow."
I head out the door and the cold air hits me. I walk down the hallway and shiver. The place is quite creepy in the early morning. I head down the stairway that says Laboratory with an arrow. I push open the steel doors and enter silently. Its empty but millions of contraptions are held in glass containers and locked away in tubes. I head over to Beccas office. Its empty.
"Where is everybody?"
I walk to the main lobby of the Laboratory, empty.
"Hello?"
Silence.
"Is anyone here?"
"Kaitlyn?"
I turn around to see Jake in a coat and he's holding a gun.
"Jake. What are you doing here?"
"I was trying to find Becca. She told me she would fix my tranquilizer, or upgrade it at the very least."
"I was looking for Becca too. I wanted to see where the training room is. Im supposed to meet Zachary there for my early morning training."
His gaze shifts to the ground and he puts the gun down. He steps closer to me and stops.
"I'll take you there if you want? Only if you want if not that's okay too I mean-"
"Sure." I nudge towards the exit.
He smiles and leads us out of the Laboratory.
"How do you like it so far?."
"Better than the Underground. The room is a lot bigger. Our dorm room was the size of the supply closet I have."
I force a small laugh. It was sometimes painful to talk about my life in the underground.
"It wasn't all bad though. I know it could've been worse but I was just too stubborn to admit it. My best friend Anmy, she always got sick of me talking about leaving the place. Talking about flowers and trees-" I stopped talking. I missed Ammy so much, I wish she was here with me, it would've made things so much easier. My chest tightens at the thought of Ammy being left behind.
"I was such a jerk to her, maybe that's why she never talked about her problems with me. I was such a horrible friend."
Before I could say anything he wrapped his arms around me, turned me to face him. I let out a small gasp when he pressed his lips against mine.
