I walked down the halls quietly making sure not to get anyone's attention.
"Good day Ms Field."
A middle aged woman gave me a warm smile and wave before entering a room labeled Staff Room. I continued to walk down quickly when I bumped into someone.
"I'm so sorry."
A boy, around 15 held out his hand for me.
"No it's my fault..."
I looked at his name tag.
"Jackson."
"I'm an intern here. I suppose you are too."
"Y-yeah. I just started work- I mean! Uh.. Interning here..."
"New huh. So I guess you didn't meet Captain Thorne."
"No I didn't."
I bit my bottom lip hiding the lie.
"Would you like me to show you around?"
He smiled brightly and gestured towards the laboratory.
"I guess."
He lead the way. He opened the steel doors with his key card.
"This is the-"
"Economical Center. I've been here before, not for long though just to drop off Becca Almods lunch."
"You mean Captain Thornes girlfriend?"
"GIRLFRIEND!?"
Everybody turned to look at me and Jackson. He pulled me out of the main plaza and into a small corner.
"Try not I attract attention here . Captain Thorne will surely fire us."
"Sorry just I thought Captain Thorne was kind of the lone wolf type of guy."
"Captain Thorne is a what now Ms field?"
I turned around to see Captain Thorne and His guard Mike Hanson.
"I said you were .... A... Uh."
"Very charming leader! Isn't that right Jessica?"
"Jessica who's Jessica?"
Jackson pointed at my name tag.
I looked down. Jessica Field.
"Oh yes! You are a very charming leader and a great economy presentation. I actually am going to work with Becca Almod in her office."
"Sad to say Becca has retired. Completely."
I swallowed hard. My fist balled and I clenched my teeth. My body became tensed.
"She was perfectly healthy when I last saw her."
"And who intended she wasn't perfectly healthy now Ms Field?"
"You emphasized Completely so I just figured. But I guess I was just thinking wrong after all she is you girlfriend, isn't she?"
His jaw clenched.
"That is none of your concern."
"I was her assistant after all and I do recall you not telling Becca about her staged show today."
"I have no idea what you are talking about-"
"Her death Captain. Your guards killed her."
"How do you know about that!"
"Jessica I think we should go-"
"Murphy was eager to shoot her first. Maybe that's why he took the first bullet."
"Kaitlyn you foolish little girl. Murphy is well alive and so is Becca."
"Lies. I killed Murphy and well Becca was shot in her forehead as I do recall."
"GUARDS!"
The guards grabbed my shoulders. I kicked one of the guards and punched the other.
"Jackson come on!"
I grabbed his hand and ran towards the exit.
"Jessica it's locked!"
"Oh no it's not."
I pulled out a grenade and placed it on the wall.
"Run!"
The walk exploded behind me and I toppled to the floor.
"Jessica are you okay?"
My head throbbed and my vision was blurry.
"Come on we have to-"
"Jessica or Kaitlyn just stay okay your really hurt."
"Not bleeding am I. Let's go."
I picked up my things and forced myself to stand on two feet. Jackson grabbed my arm leading. The way as we ran out of the laboratory. We turned the corner and hid in the supply closet.
"You lied to me didn't you."
"It was for Becca. You wouldn't understand. It's for a very important mission I don't have time for tea parties."
"Your a spy aren't you."
"No, I don't work for the Above. At least not yet. I'm trying to gather recruiters and save my friends so we can all go to the above."
"Do you know how dangerous it is up there."
"I knew you wouldn't understand. Captain Thorne told you there was no living life form up there. That's where your wrong. There is something called trees, they produce something called photosynthesis. It provides free oxygen, no limitations like we have here in the underground. There are flowers and actual daylight! That's why I want to go. To prove that the Above is a safe place."
He looked at me before fixing his hair and lab coat.
"May I tell you one thing."
"Sure."
"Your crazy."
"Suit yourself. Have fun explaining to Captain Thorne."
I took of my lab coat and tied my hair in a ponytail. I slipped on my bullet prof jacket that was in the back pack. Clothes in black I put on black sunglasses and grabbed a gun from the backpack.
"Woah."
"Like I said, I have resources."
I swung the backpack over my should and op Ed the door and headed out.
"Wait!"
I turned around.
"Ugh. Give me a gun."
"Knew I could count on you."
I tossed him a gun and walked down the hallway.
