"Your crazy I hope you know that."
The boy turned to face me pulling his gun out from my holster. I grab his wrist but he lifts his hand up, signaling he wouldn't shoot me. I calm down and nod.
"I know I am. Its worth the risk though. Living here is like a death sentence, they even limit your daily dose of oxygen. Some people die and you know what they do with the bodies? They toss them, like they're garbage. The families can't even have a proper funeral. Sometimes, the burn them."
I lace up my boots and check on sock.
"How are you doing Sock?"
"Meow"
"That's my boy."
I pet him and put more water in the filter from my canteen. The boy laughs.
"I can't believe that a cat survived the attack. I mean what's the point of the animal. Just an extra mouth to feed, an extra weight to pull you down."
I frown.
"I love him. He's been my friend since my parents died. He doesn't deserve to be alone. No one does."
"Yeah will I have for the past 10 years."
The boy rolls his eyes at me and presses the elevator button. I look up at him. Alone for 10 years? He looks down, eyes clouded. The elevator arrives and he walks in. I get up after a a couple of seconds of staring and follow him.
"Kaitlyn Greenburg. 16 years old."
I hold out my hand for him, he gave me a confused look. I grabbed his hand and shook it. It was warm and soft, not how I pictured it.
"Zachary Matron. 18 years old."
He gets in the elevator shaft and slings my pet carrier over his shoulder. I shook my head placing a hand on the straps of the carrier.
"You don't have-"
"I want to. Your still a kid you really shouldn't put too much pressure on yourself." He says.
I drop my hand, stopping in my tracks. A kid?
"Kid? I almost beat you to death and your calling me a kid?" I exclaim.
"Punches were weak. You were too focused on where you were looking than to rather where you should hit. And that my friend is not only a kid move but it could kill you."
"Meow."
"Dumb cat." He rolls his eyes.
"Talk about Sock again and I'll be sure to hit in all the right places next time."
He chuckles as we finally get to L1. He grabs my wrists and ties a rope around them loosely.
"Hey!" He puts a finger to his lips.
"Calm down will you. First we need to find Becca , she knows everything about the exit ways. Then we look for Ethan, he'll stock us up on weapons. Well also find Jake who will be just helping us on the trip and then we'll find Maddison. My girlfriend."
I wasn't surprised, he was a fairly attractive person. Ae continue to walk down the hall, passing security guards who seem to think i was a captive. I have to admit, smart strategy. I take a look around as we enter a white room with different locks on doors and a TV.
"Zachary!"
A tall girl with big brown eyes runs towards him and wraps her arms around his neck. She's probably 3 inches taller than him, without the heels.
"Maddie."
He awkwardly wraps his arms around her waist and looks at me. I quickly look away and avert my vision towards the door. A guy about 6 foot 1 comes up to me and gives me a warm smile.
"Hi. I'm Jake."
He holds out his hand for me to shake.
"Kaitlyn."
"New?"
"Yep, just got here about 30 seconds ago." I say while slightly chuckling.
He laughs. He stares into my eyes and nods.
"I've been here for a year. You'll get used to it."
"Oh, I'm not planning on staying here."
"Bummer. Was getting forward to get to know you." He smiles at me, I can't help but smile back. I haven't met such a nice person since... Ammy. Ammy... I missed her so much.
I fold my arms and grab Socks carrier from the table.
"Well, Why not stay?"
"I'm planning to go-"
"She's going to the Above."
Zachary came up to me and leaned into me. My elbow touching his waist. I flushed as I noticed he was breathing on my neck.
"She can finish her own sentence." Jake says.
Jake said looking at Zachary.
"Zachary can you come help me with the programming."
Maddison came up from behind Zachary eyeing me down. A scowl was planted on her face but when Zachary turned around she gave him a big bright smile. Scowls? I look around for an exit, I wasn't feeling too comfortable around these people any more.
"No I'll ask Ethan to help you. He knows more. Kaitlyn lets go."
He grabs my hand and leads me out the door.
"What the hell was that!"
I snatch my hand away from his grasp and stand right in front of him. He towers over me.
"What do you mean?"
"You just pulled me out of there. Without warning might I add. I was also having a conversation with Jake."
"Kaitlyn just stop, okay? We have to go."
That was the first time I've seen him so frustrated and called me by my first name.
"Your girlfriend is in there dumbfounded because you left her. She probably thinks I'm interested in you, when I'm not. I mean did you see the scowl she gave me, God it was pretty hurtful."
He gives me a soft look and grabs Socks carrier.
"Let's go."
He grabs my wrist but I pull away.
"Please." He looks straight into my eyes.
I sigh, finally giving in and we both walk towards the headquarters where we find Becca. She's short and small sized. She wears big blushed glasses and has long flowing blond hair which almost reaches to the floor. She has large blue eyes , and seems to be wearing a security uniform. She looks about to be in her mid 40s as she approaches us.
"Zachary, who's your pretty little friend here?Did you break up with Maddie yet? Wretched jealous girl she is. Or is this your new girlfriend? Or is this an affair?"
She gasps while smiling brightly at me. She was quite... talkative.
"Oh god Maddie would've been devastated! Zachary Matron I've warned you about cheating on girls, you father would've been so disappointed in you right now. God I wish your father was here. Speaking about fathers did you know that Mikes father came to take him back, after 15 years. I wouldn't even be able to handle that! Oh my lord I forget to tell you! Today I was going for lunch to get my regular sandwich when hey told me that they ran out of mustard! What kind of food service runs out-"
"Becca! Focus please."
Zachary sighs and he puts socks carrier down on the metal bed. I reach over ad open up the carrier. Sock mews great fully at me as he stretches out his legs, purring repeatedly. I giggle as I pet Sock, blowing him little kisses. Zachary glimpses at me smiling, I catch him and he looks away, averting his focus back to Becca.
"We need to get the cat medicated. It could die or get rabid and we won't risk that while she's staying here. Temporarily."
He emphasizes the word temporarily to much and looks at me.
"Alright then."
Becca fixes her glasses and picks up sock.
"Shall we?"
Sock gives a final meow before we enter the Laboratory.
